Fear the Walking Dead

When we last left, Victor told Morgan that he may have won the battle, but the war was just beginning.

Sherry pulls a container through the radioactive wasteland. She checks it with her meter, and opens it. An inflatable raft unfolds, and she takes out some supplies. Dwight radios, and asks where she is. and she says, he needed to sleep, so she went on a supply run to a warehouse they’d seen. He asks if she found anything, but she says, nada. He says he got an SOS on their Dark Horse channel. Some lady got turned around in the inlet, and it can’t wait. She tells him that he shouldn’t go alone; it might be a trap set by Victor. He says, what if it breaks the way Victor says it will? They’ll need every soldier they can get. She asks if the woman can fight, but he says he didn’t ask for her resumé. Sherry tells him to wait for her, but he says he can’t. Neither can she.

A woman runs through woods, with some zombies after her. She falls, and gets up, leaving her bag behind. She continues to run, but the zombies surround her. Dwight rides up, and shoots them until he runs out of bullets. There’s just one left, and the woman picks up a rock. He tells her, it’s radiated; don’t let it touch her. She’s about to whack it, but Sherry rides up, and shoots it. She says, she’s sorry she’s late, but Dwight says, she’s just in time. Dwight asks he woman if she’s okay, and he and Sherry introduce themselves. The woman says, she’s Maya, and Sherry says, they need to get her checked out. Dwight says, she doesn’t understand. The air quality and the… She’s not from around here, is she? Maya says, not exactly. She came on a boat, looking for her kid. Sherry asks what it’s like out there, and how far the fallout is, but Maya has no idea. She says she’s been on the boat for days, and Sherry asks when she last saw her kid. Maya says, a few months ago. Marco was in the tent, asleep, and in the morning, he was gone. Sherry wonders if it could have been the dead, but Maya says, she wasn’t touched. She heard the message from the tower, inviting people, and thought maybe Marco was taken there. Sherry says, she doesn’t want to go there, and Dwight says, there’s bad blood between them and the man in charge, but that shouldn’t keep her from going if her kid is there. He tells her to get her stuff, and he’ll point her in the right direction. Maya goes back to get her bag, and Sherry says, wow. Dwight says, Maya is better off there, but Sherry says, they’re about to go to war; he thinks they’re going to lose. He says, they’re outmanned, outgunned (♫ outnumbered, outplanned ♫), and Maya has a kid. They can take that risk, but she can’t. He asks, what’s the look? and she says she wishes it wasn’t like this. On the radio, Morgan says he’s coming in hot, and needs help with a hand-off. Sherry says, they’re on it. Where is he. He says, he’s a couple miles north of the Pennsylvania. He needs them to take Mo. The walkers from the tower followed him, and he needs to dump them. Sherry says, depending on how many, they might not have enough ammo, and Morgan says, there’s a lot all of them. He looks down the hill at the tons of zombies following him.

Dwight radios Luci, and asks where the crater is. She tells him, and asks if he needs help. He says, no, but he’ll let her know if anything changes. He and Sherry ride, and Sherry asks, what’s going on? Dwight says, did he mess up? Victor could have picked up the code he sent. He wonders if she thinks he’s lost, and she says she doesn’t, but everything they talked about at the gym, everything he said he wanted… He says, she wanted it to; they wanted a family. She says, if they don’t take the tower, can they have any of that? He says, okay, they’ll take the tower, and she says, but they can’t do anything until they get the zombies off Morgan’s ass.

Morgan tells Mo that he hopes she doesn’t remember any of this when she gets older, then says, who is he kidding? He’ll be happy if she just gets to be older. He sees Dwight and Sherry, and Dwight says, he got Mo back. Morgan tells them, Mr. Dorie gave his life so she could escape. Everybody else is still there. Dwight asks how Morgan picked up so many, and Morgan says, some followed him after John handed off Mo, and he didn’t discourage the others. Victor felt safe because of the zombies surrounding the tower. Tonight, Victor will try to draw more in with the light, and he’s got to dump these. Dwight says, taking them to the crater will work, and suddenly, there’s gunfire. The three of them jet, and Morgan says, it’s Victor’s rangers. Sherry says, are they crazy? and Morgan says, Victor knows the only reason they haven’t made a move is because of Mo. Dwight says, they’re going to get themselves killed, and Morgan says, they’ve got to keep the zombies together, or Victor will easily draw the them back to the tower. Dwight can get them further away, faster, and get Mo to the sub. Mo should be with whoever will keep her safe. Dwight and Sherry run, Victor’s rangers disperse, and Morgan yells to the zombies to stay on him, shooting in the air to get their attention.

As they ride, Sherry asks how Mo is, and Dwight says, he thinks she likes it. They stop, seeing a masked man on a horse. Dwight asks him to get out of the way, and the man says, or what? They’ll shoot him? They’ve got a code. They won’t kill him. Sherry asks what he knows about their code, and Wes takes off his mask, saying, a lot. Sherry says, they will shoot, and Wes says he doesn’t think so, but if they do, the rest of the rangers will be on them. Dwight asks if Wes really cares about protecting Victor, and Wes says, he cares about surviving, and the tower is his best chance of that. Dwight says, if he helps them take down Victor, they’ll pretend that Wes didn’t leave. Wes says, give him the kid, and Dwight laughs. Wes repeats, give him the kid, and Dwight says, Wes is trying to be Victor’s right hand man; doing what he needs to protect his own. He gets it. Wes asks if Dwight thinks this is a power trip? He’s doing this because they made him believe in something better. He killed his brother because of it, but It turns out they’re not practicing the bullsh*t they preach. He should have thrown in with Derek. At least he was honest. Sherry says, this is Wes’s last warning, and Wes asks what she means. Dwight shoots close to Wes’s horse, and the horse throws Wes to the ground, then runs off. Sherry says, if Wes really thought building something better was bullsh*t, he would have shot them, and Dwight says, while Wes is on his lonesome, and waiting for his cavalry to come, think about what he said.

Morgan is crossing the wasteland, and a nearby car explodes. He runs and ducks behind another car, as the mini horde walks in the distance. He sees Alicia, and grabs her. He tells her they have to get out of here; Victor’s rangers are close by. She says, the car was her, and he asks, why? She says, to keep the zombies from tearing Morgan apart, and he says he needs them to follow him. He shoots in the air to draw them, and says he’s got to ditch them so Victor can’t use them. He hollers at the zombies, and asks, where Alicia is coming from? When did she get back? Sorry. How is she feeling? She says, she’s still standing, and he asks if she found what she was looking for. She says, she got the transmitter, and she heard Victor’s message. He asks if she’s seen anyone, and she says, not yet. She asks if he found that girl, and he says, the one who helped her on the sub? No, but he got Mo out, and got the dead to follow him. That’s why they’re making their move tonight. Alicia tells, she’d said to wait, but he says, they didn’t know where she was. They have to get back to the sub. The tower won’t be guarded until dawn. She says, they have one shot, and they’re not ready, but he says, Luci got Arno’s people. They have Alicia’s people, and the rest; it’s enough. She says, not even close. They can get more. He says, they can’t keep waiting. She’s welcome to join them, but he understands if she doesn’t. She says, he followed them for her; the least she can do is get them to follow him. He yells for the zombies to keep coming, and he and Alicia walk,

Dwight asks if Sherry has heard anything from Luci, but she says, nothing. If Victor’s rangers were tracking them, they would have passed them already. She’s not moving until they make contact. Dwight has made a mobile out of car air fresheners, and spins it for Mo. Sherry asks, what the hell is that? and he says he calls it his auto-mobile. Mo likes it. She says she’s trying to keep Mo alive, and he says he’s showing Mo a reason to stay alive. He asks, what’s going on? and she says, nothing; it’s not important. He says, he’s learned that when she says, it’s not important, it’s very important. She says, it’s hard to see him with Mo, laughing and smiling, and making dad jokes. He asks, why? and she says, because they’re not going to have that. He says, she doesn’t know that, but she says, he was right. She knows what up against. He asks if she wants to give up, and she says, no, but it’s not easy. Luci radios, and Sherry tells her to open the hatch, and prepare to lock down. They’re coming, but they might not be alone. Luci tells them not to come, and Dwight grabs the radio, asking, why? Luci says, there’s a radiation leak, and they’re in the middle of an evacuation. Sherry tells Dwight, they’ll wait it out, and he says, Victor was probably listening; he’ll find them unless they keep moving. Shery says, all right; let’s move. Dwight tries to take her bag from her, but she doesn’t want him to have it. They struggle over the bag, and he insists on seeing what’s in it. He finds navigation charts, and asks, where was she this morning? and she says, getting… an emergency raft ready at the launch. He says, she was just going leave? but she says, it’s not for her; it’s for him. He asks what she’s talking about, and she says, they know what’s coming. She heard the offer Victor made. She doesn’t want him to turn into the person he doesn’t want to be. He says, they’ve been over this, and it’s not going to happen. She tries to give him the charts, but he throws them down. He asks if she actually thinks he’d throw in with Victor, and she says, it’s happened before. She doesn’t don’t want it to happen again. He says, that’s bullsh*t and she knows it. Wes is suddenly there, and says, bullsh*t is thinking they could stay ahead of them. If they’re thinking of running, there are a half dozen rangers on their way; hand Mo over. Dwight asks what they get in return, and Sherry asks what he’s doing. He says, if she thinks this is how they’re going to end up, they might as well get something. He asks if they can still take Victor up on his offer, and Wes says, it’s not his call, but it will help their case. Sherry asks again what he’s doing, and he says, he’s not going to be the better person if she doesn’t think he can be. He tells her to get Mo, and walks forward with his hands up. Sherry tells Mo, it’s okay, and Wes nods to one of the rangers, who moves toward Dwight. Dwight suddenly grabs him, and the other ranger shoots, but hits his co-worker. Sherry shoots the other ranger, and Wes jumps Dwight. Dwight yells for Sherry to go, and she runs with Mo.

Morgan and Alicia walk, and Alicia catches him looking at her. He says, she never answered him. How is she feeling? She says, the fever has come back at night like before, and the dreams are getting worse. He asks what that means, and she says, they’re more and more real. It’s like she can’t run from them anymore. He asks if she remembers the last time; they were following the zombies. She says, the senator is probably in there somewhere, and he says, if she wants to find him, be his guest. She asks where he’s taking them, and he tells her, to a crater where a bunch of them are trapped. Alicia says, if he goes after the tower, Victor is going to come after him hard. Morgan says, he already is. That’s why they have to move now. She says, they’re not ready, but he says, they don’t have a choice. Grace recorded some songs for Mo, but she also said this to him. He pushes play on the recorder, and Grace says, they don’t have much time. If this works, take Mo as far away from Victor and his tower as humanly possible, even if it means leaving without her. He tells Alicia, she’s right; it’s the only way that’s safe. She says, he’s going to take Mo away? and he says, if he finds a way out. He doesn’t want to when they’re barely hanging on. He left folks he cared about before, and it didn’t sit right with him, but he has to take care of Mo. She says, if they take the tower he won’t have to go, and he says, Victor is more vulnerable than he’s ever been. She says, they’re still not ready. They’re outnumbered, ill-prepared, tired, hungry, and sick. He says, that’s never stopped them before, and asks why she’s stalling. She keeps saying how little time she has left.

Sherry fusses over Mo, and Dwight catches up to her. He asks why she stopped, and she says, Mo needed changing. She asks, where’s Wes? and he says, Wes is out there, but he slowed him down. She says, the meter says good here, but they can’t go any further, and he asks how Mo is doing. Sherry says, she has no idea, and puts Mo’s helmet on her. They walk, and she says she’s sorry about what she said earlier. She didn’t think he’d take Victor’s offer for himself, and he asks if she won’t just tell him what’s going on. They see a sign that says Franklin on it, and Dwight gets on the radio. He asks if anyone knows where the bunker is that Teddy locked Alicia in, and Alicia says she thinks she can answer that. It’s under the Franklin Hotel. He says he thinks they found it, and Sherry says, they can hide in there. He asks Alicia if there’s another way out, and she says, the drainage works in the north end, but it’s not stable. Dwight says, the rangers might have heard them on the radio; they should go through the crater. Sherry says, the readings are too high, but he says, they have their masks, and Mo’s suit is lined with lead. Getting her out safe is all that matters. Sherry says, that’s not what she’s talking about, and he says, first, she thinks he’ll bail; now she doesn’t want to do what they need to, to keep Mo safe. Give her to him. Sherry says, she thinks she might be pregnant, and he says, that’s a good thing. They hear horses, and he tells her, go. They go inside, and he closes door.

Dwight says, the whole system is shorted, and they grab a bench, using it to bar the door. Mo cries, and Sherry says she’s sorry. She should have told him. He asks, how far along she thinks she is, and she says, a couple weeks. He says, they’ll find her a test, but she says, she already took one. He says, and? and she says she hasn’t looked at it yet. That’s why she didn’t want going through her bag. She knows him. If it’s positive he’ll want to do what’s best, even if it means going to the tower. If they do that, it will destroy all the parts of him she loves; that make him a great father. She can’t let that happen to him. She wants their child to know him, not the person Victor will turn him into. He says, he loves her for trying to protect him, but he should be able to protect her too, which means, she doesn’t get to do it alone, especially when they’re in this together. She’s about to take the test out of the wrapper, when they hear banging. He says, let’s move.

The crater is empty, and Alicia says, she thought Morgan said it was filled with zombies. He tells her, that’s what Dwight and Sherry said. They see a ladder/ramp, and Morgan says, somebody let them out. Alicia says, if they dump the zombies there, they’ll just climb right out. Morgan radios Dwight and says, the crater is a no go. They have to find another place for the dump.

Sherry picks up Alicia’s pokey device, and tells Dwight, keep moving. They get to the drainage tunnel, and Sherry asks if he can he clear it. She wonders how loud the fire alarm is. Does he think it can be heard above ground? He says, maybe, and she says, Morgan and Alicia will be heading back. He says, and they’ll be walking over them. She says, get digging, and lights a match.

Upstairs, Wes and some rangers are searching the place, when the alarm goes off. Wes just about wets his pants, and yells for someone to find it and turn it off.

Morgan asks if Alicia can hear that, and Alicia says, they’re on top of the bunker. Dwight and Sherry must have tripped the alarms. They need to get the zombies in there. He says, with Dwight, Sherry, and Mo? but she says, they’ll get her out. Trust her.

They crawl through the pipe, and some sand falls. Dwight says, the walkers are above them. Outside, Morgan says, keep coming, and tries to radio Dwight. He asks if they made it to the tunnel, but Alicia says, the signal wont reach down there. They’ll get the zombies in, then go to where the pipe comes out. Alicia loudly instructs the zombies like  they’re students on a field trip, and they file in. Inside, one of the rangers yells to another to get the power on. The zombies come in, surprising them, and they’re out. Dwight and keep going through the tunnel, when pieces start to fall, and it becomes blocked.

Wes stabs a zombie, as one of the rangers is ripped apart. Wes baby cries in a hallway.

Dwight says he thinks they’re stuck. He’s sorry. She says, it’s not his fault, and Mo cries. He takes Mo, and tells Mo that he’s sorry. They tried everything. He promises they did. Mo quiets, and he says, maybe he’s just not… Maybe it’s not meant to be. She takes out the test, and he asks if she really wants to do that right now. She says she needs to. He was right. It isn’t something she should have done on her own; she should have done it with him. Does he want to help her? She holds the stick while he pulls the wrapper off, and we see it’s a plus sign. He laughs, and says, come on. She smiles, and they hug. She says, it’s not going to end like this. They’re going to get out. He asks, how? and she says, the same way as before, and starts chipping away with Alicia’s pokey thing.

Above, Morgan asks if they shouldn’t be out already, but Alicia says, give them some time. Morgan wonders if she shouldn’t go to the sub, and get everybody ready. They have a few more hours daylight. Alicia says, he was right, and he says, about what? She says she could have come back sooner, and he asks, why didn’t she? She says she knows what she has to do to Victor, but she’s not sure she can. He says, she’ll do the right thing when the time comes. She’s already done the impossible. She’s still here, and it’s not over for her, not by a long shot. They hear Mo crying, and Morgan yells, hey, Mo. Sherry comes out, and out pops Mo, followed by Dwight. Morgan opens Mo’s suit, and Alicia asks how Dwight cleared the tunnel. He says, he didn’t, Sherry did, and Sherry thanks Alicia for the assist, handing Alicia her pokey device. Alicia tells her to keep it. If they can get on the sub, she can use the transmitter, and make a real push for taking over the tower. Dwight says, the sub is leaking radiation; it’s a no-go. Sherry says, Maya heard Victor’s message, and Dwight says, she was 20 miles out. Alicia says she could use the antenna at the tower, and Morgan says, Victor has the power, and he’s at the highest point. Alicia says, one more reason to take it, and Morgan says she’s going to take it. He’s got to do what Grace asked, and get Mo as far away as possible. Alicia says, there’s no way out, but Sherry says, she knows a way.  

Everyone gathers at the shore to say goodbye to Morgan and Mo. Morgan says, the fallout could hug the coast for miles, but Sherry says, Maya came from a clean place. He says he can’t walk away as Alicia is about to face Victor, but Alicia says, he has to; for Mo, for Grace, and for himself. They’re both doing something they don’t want to. He’s right. She’s going to be okay; she can do this. He nods, and she says, he’s going to see her again. They smile at each other, and Alicia says, now go. He hugs her, and she says, she’s got this. Morgan takes Mo, and thanks them. Dwight tells Sherry that she can get on too, but she says, Victor doesn’t know. He can’t use it against them, but they can use it against him. Now they have something to fight for. He says, okay, and Morgan puts Mo in the raft. Dwight gives Morgan the mobile, and tells him, it smells good, and Mo finds it entertaining. Morgan hugs them, and says, he appreciates it. So good luck, okay? He gets in the raft, and they push the raft off into the water. Morgan rows, and Mo sleeps like an angel.

Alicia looks into the distance and says, we gotta move. The sun sets in a few hours. Follow me. She walks, and they follow.

Morgan rows away.

Next time, Alicia calls Victor from the call box, Victor makes a toast, there’s a fight for the tower, and Wes says, it’s over.

The Walking Dead

Connie and Virgil run through the woods, chased by zombies. He says they have to find somewhere to hide, and they keep running until they see a house. There are a few zombies milling around, and a zombie grabs Virgil as Connie is trying to get the front door open. The door finally opens, and three of them – Connie, Virgil, and the zombie – tumble inside. Connie manages to get the door shut before other zombies follow. The zombie has Virgil down, and Connie smashes it in the head, and puts her back to the door.  

Carol tells Aaron and Rosita that she’s going to ride out. Aaron suggests a larger group, but Carol says Connie doesn’t have time to wait. Magna comes by, and asks if they’ve seen Kelly.   

Connie looks through the slats of the wall at the zombies milling around outside. She sees a moose head on the wall and is creeped out, and the house as a whole is tattered and messy. She looks at a small written map, and Virgil quietly goes upstairs, and looks around. He checks one bedroom, then another. He comes back, and tells her that he checked the whole house. They’re okay. Nobody’s there. She looks at the map, and he grabs a book and writes, you need some rest. He tells her that she hasn’t slept in days. He writes, I can keep watch, but she just looks worried. He writes, we will find your home, and says, you sleep. She shakes her head, and writes, unsafe. He tells her, rest, making a gesture meaning sleep. She shakes her head again, and he sits, while she looks out again, remembering the cave. She rouses Virgil, and writes, going to search the house again.  

Frost is tied to a chair, and not looking too good, since he’s been beaten pretty badly. Carver pulls Frost’s fingernails out, and says, tell him where they are. Daryl watches, and Pope asks if it bothers him. Daryl says he’s done worse, and tells Carver that he’s up. Carver says, like hell he is, but Daryl takes his place. He looks at Frost, who asks if they’re just going to stand there, staring dreamily at each other, or are they going to get to it? Daryl grabs him by the neck, and Carver says, if Daryl kills him, the two of them have a problem. Daryl drops Frost, and says he knows what he’s doing. He tells Frost to give them the location where his friends are hiding. If he does that, this all goes away. Frost says, it’s a good offer, or, hear him out, they can all go eat sh*t instead. Daryl cracks him one across the face, and Carver says he’s already gone through these steps. Maybe they should start taking pieces. Pope tells Carver to give him the knife, and Frost tells Daryl, do what he’s got to do. Pope gives Daryl a big knife, and Daryl takes off his vest and throws it down. I guess that means he’s ready to rumble. He says he doesn’t think Frost understands. He’s the best shot Frost’s got. Frost asks, why? Are they friends now? Daryl says, no, it’s not because they’re friends. He’s the one holding the knife. Frost says, Daryl’s buddy is the one holding the gun, and Daryl smacks him again, saying, shut up. Listen to him. Frost is close enough to know where they’re hiding. Daryl grabs one of Frost’s fingers, and says, no one needs to die. Just say the location, so they can all walk away happy. Frost says, go to hell, a-hole, and gets a finger chopped off for his trouble. Daryl says, the location, or he’ll take another one. At first, Frost refuses, but then tells him, yellow house, and gives an address. Daryl asks Pope if that’s good enough, and Leah says she can scout it out. Pope tells her to take a squad, and he wants her, Carver, and Daryl to go. Carver balks at taking Daryl, and Daryl tries to hand back the knife, but Pope shakes his head.

Connie checks some of the rooms, but they’re locked. She sees old-time portrait photos along the walls with the eyes gouged out. Not real promising. She goes into a bathroom and looks at herself in the mirror, telling herself, don’t you look delightful? She looks inside the medicine cabinet, and checks out what’s there. She realizes the back of it is a slatted wall, and suddenly, there’s an eyeball looking back at her from the other side. She runs downstairs, and wakes Virgil. She signs, we’re not alone, and he asks, what happened? She signs, something else is in here with us. He says he doesn’t understand, and she signs, it was behind the wall staring back at me. She grabs the book, starts to write, but gets frustrated, and throws it down. She grabs Virgil’s knife and cuts at a painting. She steps back, and we see she’s written, NOT ALONE. I actually got a chill there.

Leah, Daryl, Carver, and a couple other men find the yellow house. Carver says, it’s quiet… there are two entrances. Leah tells the men to go by twos, and gives them instructions. Carver says, what about d*ckhead? Is he supposed to believe Daryl has his back? She says, that’s her job, and they move toward the house. Daryl hangs back, and pulls on a car windshield wiper. Inside, Maggie sees a clothesline move. The men go inside, yelling, clear! as they go through the house. Carver says Frost jerked them around, but Daryl suggests they check the house first. Leah tells the men to search outside, and she stays to search the house with Daryl and Carver.  

Kelly rides through the woods, and sees a dead horse near an empty campsite. She looks under the tarp, and starts going through the knapsacks there. The last one she opens has Kelly’s notebook, and she flips through it, seeing things like, trapped with the dead and walked with them for days, and asking where Michonne is. She says, Kelly, where are you? and takes the bag with her.

Virgil looks through cabinet to the other room, and tells Connie that he doesn’t see anything. She signs, something was there, and he says he’s sure she saw something, but she hasn’t slept, so maybe it’s… She shakes her head adamantly, and he says, sorry. They’ll give the house another sweep. She says she’s not staying there, and starts to walk toward the front, but a door slams shut behind her, separating her and Virgil. It’s silent because we’re getting Connie’s POV. She slides slowly down the hallway, with her back against the wall. She feels something behind her, and runs. A very creepy human on all fours, moving really fast, chases her, and she slams the door in its face. She looks down into the basement. This thing was so bizarre and scary, like something out of the old Creepy comic books.

Leah feels the sink, and says, it’s still wet, and Daryl says Frost was telling the truth. Coming downstairs, Daryl notices the corner of a trap door, peeking out from under a rug in the living room, but doesn’t say anything. He suggests, maybe they went out back, and Carver asks if Daryl is in a hurry to leave. Underneath the trap door, Negan, Elijah, Gabriel, and Maggie listen. Daryl says he’s just trying to help, and he and Carver argue. Leah tells them to stop, and says, she’ll check the perimeter, and check for possible runners. Carver says he doesn’t have time for this bullsh*t, and she says she understands, but doesn’t need it. Carver says he’ll check again upstairs, and make sure he didn’t miss anything. Leah tells Daryl, either he’s with them or not, and he asks what she wants him to do. She says, for one thing, stop pissing off Carver.

Kelly’s horse won’t budge, and she pulls on the reins. She slips, falling into a large mud puddle. Carol asks if she needs help, and walks into view with Rosita and Magna. Magna asks what Kelly was thinking. She should have told them she was heading out. They help Connie up, and she says she’s fine. She hands Magna the book, and says, it’s Connie’s. She found Connie’s camp. Connie, and some guy she was with, left in a hurry. Something’s not right. Magna looks through the book, and says, she thought they were being followed. Kelly tears up, and says, she’s out there and scared. Connie needs her. If something happened… Carol says, they’ll find her first, and they keep moving.

Connie holds the door shut, and it gets quiet. She slowly goes down the stairs, and when she gets to the bottom, she sees human bones everywhere, picked clean. The stairs shake, and something falls. The feral creature thing starts coming down the stairs on all fours – which is pretty effing creepy – and Connie pulls herself up, and into a vent leading to another room. Some of the walls are weird and made of slats, and she looks through them, seeing another eyeball, but this time, from the cave. She looks again, and sees nothing. Virgil suddenly runs inside the room, slamming the door shut. Connie sees Virgil, and bangs on the wall. He comes toward her, uncertain. She taps out SOS, and he moves closer, and I yell, no! because one of those things is behind him, being all stealthy. Connie tries to warn him, but…   

She watches in horror as this creature pounds on Virgil. She tries to get one of the slats off, while it strangles him, saying, hungry. He fades, and she manages to distract the creature by banging on the wall again. It gets distracted, and Virgil is able to grab his knife, and he stabs it. It crawls off, trailing blood. He struggles to get up, and stabs the knife into the wall (on his side, it’s wallpapered). The knife comes through an inch from Connie’s nose, covered in blood. She pulls frantically at a slat, and gets it off, quickly putting her hand through so that he sees it’s her. He makes a hole big enough for him to help her come through.    

Daryl tells Leah that they ran, and won’t come back; the Reapers hit them hard. The Reapers have twenty people in town, they’ve got weapons, and the balls. They probably saw the Reapers coming miles away, and ran. Carver asks what Daryl’s point is, and Leah says, there’s nothing here. It’s time to go. Carver thinks they’re missing something, and Daryl asks if he wants to waste another hour. Carver says, this dirtbag wants to play, and Daryl says, come on. Leah says, it’s not the time, and it’s not his call. Carver says they both know who Daryl is deep down. He was there, remember? After that, does she think this is going to end different? Leah says, so this is what? Carver looking out for her, and Carver says, she always got him. She says, when Pope locked her in the cabin and lit it up, he must have known. Was he was looking out for her then? He tells her, wake up. Everything is a test. Does she think this guy gives a sh*t about them? They’re going to fail. Daryl says, Carver is right. He doesn’t give a sh*t about any of them, except for Leah. He’s here for her. It’s no secret he’s made mistakes, but he’s here right now. Maybe he’ll do it better this time, if she lets him. Pope scares the sh*t out of him, and he doesn’t want to end up face first in the fire under Pope’s boot. But if Leah says trust him, he’ll trust him. Leah says, they’ve wasted enough time here; it’s time to move on. Carver says, sure. It’s her call. He sees the trap door corner, and says, hold on. He pushes Daryl out of the way, moves the rug, and opens it triumphantly, drawing his gun, but there’s nothing there. Daryl says, told you.    

Negan, Maggie, Gabriel, and Elijah sneak out the root cellar door.

It starts to storm, and Rosita says, which way? Carol wonders if they should split up, check both trails, and double back, but Magna says, a storm is coming. They should stick together. Rosita says, it’s up to Kelly, and Kelly decides to keep going.

Virgil tells Connie that he’s never seen people this far gone… to herd them like prey, but they’re not. He’s getting her out. They’ll make a run for it. He gives her the knife, and says, no matter what happens, she has to keep going, with or without him. Don’t stop. She says, no, and tries give the knife back, but he says, no, just take it. She puts it down on the floor, and signs, if we’re getting out, we’re going together. She’s not letting him give up now. He says he doesn’t have a choice. He lost himself for a long time, off the map, and made choices he can’t unchoose, but Michonne gave him another chance. She pointed him to a road, and that road led to Connie. He has to pass on that chance, or it all means nothing. If she can find her family… He cries, and she signs, we leave here together. He says he needs her to promise to keep going no matter what happens. She puts her hand in his, and locks their fingers. He says, together, and they hear the creatures coming. He says, time’s up. They open the door and go out; her with the knife, and him wielding a table leg. He tries a door, but it’s locked, and the feral creatures appear. Virgil clubs at them, but they get him down. Connie slashes at them with the knife, and they back off. Virgil tells her to get out, but she drags him out with her. The creepiest creature of all comes crawling down the stairs, and Connie shields Virgil. She grabs the zombie they came in with, disembowels him, and covers herself in the guts. She opens the front door, letting in the dead. Very clever. There’s a free-for-all, and the dead feast on the feral creatures. I think leaving now would be a good idea.

Outside, Virgil stumbles, and tells her go. Some of the creatures have escaped, and make a beeline for Virgil, but get a slingshot rock in the head from Kelly. Kelly sees Connie, and starts to cry. They stand looking at each other for a moment, and Kelly says, I’m sorry. Connie begins to cry, and they hug.     

Leah, Daryl, and Carver come back, and Pope asks, what’s the word? Leah says, there were signs they were there, but they slipped away. She’s sorry. Pope laughs, and she says she thought he’d be disappointed. He says, the night was a success. After they left, he continued the discussion with their guest, and he wasn’t too talkative, but Pope got everything he needed out of him. Pope looks at Daryl, who nods, and we see new zombie Frost tied to a tree. Pope and Carver go inside, Pope putting his arm around Carver. Daryl and Leah watch, and Leah looks at Daryl. Yeah, I don’t think this is good.

Next time, Negan says, the world is different – there are fewer people to fight for, and fewer things to fight over; Lance tells Yumiko that he can help her people; Maggie pretends to be a Whisperer; and Gabriel comes across a stranger talking to his spirit guide in the woods.

🎤 A couple of Talking Dead insights. Lauren Ridloff (Connie) was a guest tonight, and said she and Angel Theory (Kelly) were really like sisters. Before filming, they hadn’t seen each other in person since the beginning of the pandemic, and she’d asked that they be kept separated on set until it was time for them to meet in the scene at the end. She thought it would make it more authentic, and I have to agree it was a good choice. When they started crying, it made me want to cry. IMO, this was one of the best episodes ever. And while a great script, great acting, and great direction by Greg Nicolero played a part, it was largely because of those creepy-ass feral creatures. We also learned that some of the portraits were of them during a more civilized time, and the eyes had been scratched out so they weren’t reminded of how they used to be. I love when they get all detailed about a backstory we normally wouldn’t even know about.

October 6, 2019 – Fire In the Sky, a Little Talk, a New Superhero, Shrinking Reality & That Monday Feeling

What I Watched Today

The Walking Dead

Training Day. A Russian space capsule lands in the water. A zombie gets out, walks to shore, and gets a machete in the head for his trouble. It’s wielded by Judith. On the beach, everyone marches in formation. Daryl watches as Ezekiel and Jerry bang on the side of an old ship stuck on shore. They open the door, a few zombies come out, looking mighty slimy and weak, and they close it again. Aaron leads everyone forward. The first line of defense holds spiked shields. They part and the second line shoots the zombies down with arrows. They march toward the ship. Jerry and Ezekiel open the door again, and let out more. The first line stands firm, and the zombies walk into their spikes. A spear hurtles into a zombie’s head. Another zombie group is let out, more of them than previously. The ranks open, and Michonne, Luke, and Daryl get up close and personal, with Michonne slicing the tops off of zombie heads, and the others using the smashing heads method.

Ezekiel and Jerry are having a hard time keeping the door closed, and finally give up, stepping away from the ship. The door falls, and takes part of the ship’s side with it. Michonne tells everyone, stay in formation. Remember your training. Daryl slices and dices, Judith pikes one, and Magna stabs zombie heads. Yumiko shoots arrows.

Back at camp, fish is prepared. Luke talks to Jules, as they undo a fishing net for rope. He asks if she’s flirting with him. She says she is, and he says, cool. Michonne tells Daryl, it was tiring, but worth the trip. He says they did good. Rick would have been proud. She hopes so. He says they should bring the kids next time. Rick would have loved it.

Judith and some of the kids dump out shells. While going through them, Judith uncovers a face buried in the sand.

Aaron thinks they should put Alexandria on lockdown, just in case. Michonne says, everyone is still on alert. She appreciates his caution, but they don’t need to start a panic. Cyndie says, it washed up on shore, with lots of other stuff. Aaron tells Michonne, the mask signifies they’re still out there. They need to be sure. Michonne suggests they get a group  together. She tells Daryl to make sure Lydia knows not to leave again without saying goodbye.

The group rides into the woods.

Off their horses, Aaron asks what Michonne thinks. She says she thinks a lot of things, and he says maybe they’re the villains of someone else’s story. They’re a threat to their survival. So dangerous, they’re threatened with being wiped out. It makes him wonder sometimes. She doesn’t give a sh*t about the Whisperers or where they stand. He says he’s not talking about the Whisperers.

Michonne says they might not find the answer. Aaron says, the Whisperers cover their tracks. If a mask was found, there’s a reason. He sees some zombies near a trashed car, and rides toward them. She warns him that he’s near a border, but he dismounts, and kicks some zombie ass. One gets the better of him, and another reaches out from under the car, and grabs his ankle. Michonne machetes the first one, and he pikes the ankle biter. She tells him, that was stupid. They agreed not to cross the border. They don’t want to start anything without a reason. If had been the Whisperers, they could have died. It wasn’t them, and they could have died, and for what? Aaron says acting like this isn’t normal. Holding their breath for months isn’t normal. Michonne says they have to keep cool or they win. Aaron says he’s always been the nice guy. The good Samaritan. Eric is dead. Jesus is dead. He’s sick of being nice. Michonne says good and nice never got her anywhere, but smart did. The Whisperers have nuclear weapons; they don’t. It’s not about being nice, but keeping people alive. They’re not going to die over nothing. She hates it too. Aaron says they should go, and Michonne radios the others that they’re circling back.

They ride to where Luke and some of the others have found the remnants of a camp. Magna shows Yumiko a skeleton, and some dead bodies. Aaron wonders if the campers were fighting the walkers. Luke says maybe they’re not connected. They see another body, naked and face down. Michonne says it looks like they’ve been there a while. The keep walking, and Magna shows them a skin. Aaron picks it up on stick, and says, at least one was there at some point. Yumiko wonders, when, and what the hell happened?

They ride to Oceanside, and Michonne tells Aaron, fear can be dangerous. It can drive them apart. They need to squash it before it starts. Aaron says, fear can keep you safe too, but Michonne says, be smart, not afraid. She was thinking about what he said; who they’ve become and who they are. The truth is they are the good guys. She knows who Rick and Carl were… and Eric, and Jesus too. They have to choose to be the good guys, even when it’s hard. The minute they start to question that, they lose sight of it. And when the answer to that question starts to change, they’ll be scarier than any skin mask. Aaron walks away.

Michonne hears Judith talking to RJ, telling him the kid version of Rick’s story. She says, the brave man couldn’t let the walkers hurt his friends, so he blew up the bridge. RJ asks if the brave man went with his friends, but she says he died and went to heaven. Michonne smiles sadly. Judith tells RJ that Rick is in their hearts, and Michonne hugs him. Judith joins in the hug, and RJ says he didn’t like it when the brave man died. Why? Michonne says, some people you love so much, you’d do anything for them, like she would for them. RJ says, and his dad, and they hug again. They hear an explosion, and look up. A trail of fire shoots through the sky, and Judith asks if it’s a meteor. Eugene comes in on the radio, and says he needs to talk to her now.

Bird Wisdom. Aaron asks Michonne if this means they’re back, and she says, not necessarily, but they need to stay on alert. Eugene, who has a bunch of charts hanging up to record everything about the baby, changes diapers. Rosita works out with a punching bag. She feeds the baby, and then Eugene burps the baby. Success! Eugene tries to work, and turns off the music, which causes the baby to wail, Rosita turns it back on, and boxes some more. Gabriel comes by, and Eugene gives him some statistics on the baby. Rosita says the baby isn’t an experiment, and he can’t boil it down to charts and graphs. Siddiq arrives.

In the classroom, Lydia gets frustrated with learning to read. She says she’s gone her whole life without it, but the teacher says, it will open the world to her. Gabriel comes in, followed by some of the others. He says they need the room, and Yumiko asks if Lydia should be there.

Lydia practices with a pokey stick (which I learn later from Talking Dead, is called a Bo staff, but I’m staying with pokey stick). Negan tends the vegetable garden, and asks if everything is okay. Lydia says, it’s the same as ten minutes ago, and he asks why folks are giving her the side-eye. She says they’re eyeing him too, but he says it’s because of what he’s done in past years. A dude tells Negan to get back to work, and says Lydia is supposed to keep her distance. She tells Negan, someone found a skin, and Negan says she needs to watch her back. He winks at her. Eugene and Gabriel walk by, and Negan says, hey boss, but no one talks to him.

Siddiq kisses the baby, who laughs as he puts it in the crib. A mobile of origami paper cranes hangs above. Siddiq flashes back to Alpha. He splashes some water on his face. He sees a big spider, and remembers seeing one in the Whisperers camp. Dante pokes his head in, and Siddiq asks what he’s doing there. Dante says he could hear the baby screaming all the way to where he was. He wanted to make sure everything was cool. Siddiq picks the baby up, and says he was just doing household tasks. Dante says he’s been reorganizing the meds, and tells Siddiq, they’re like gods in the apocalypse. Dante wonders what’s with the yellow alert business, and the Whisperers. Siddiq thinks back again, and Dante wonders what’s up with him. Siddiq says he needs get his kid to sleep, and thanks Dante for checking on him. When Dante leaves, he thinks about Alpha.

Gabriel finds Negan back in his cell. Gabriel is surprised that Negan knocked off early. He thought Negan couldn’t get enough of the great outdoors. Negan says, it’s starting, and Gabriel says, if he wants to say something, say just say it. Negan says let him regurgitate some baby bird wisdom into Gabriel’s pretty mouth. People tend to get mixed up about who they hate. Yesterday, he was public enemy number one, now he’s the guy who tends vegetables and takes out the trash. He’s keeping his head down until this thing passes, in case his category gets moved to them. Gabriel says, that’s not what’s happening, and Negan tells him, he didn’t say that. He said, it will be. The boogey man stuck his mask out of the closet door, and people are putting their sh*tting pants back on. Pants sh*tting is definitely happening. The alert sh*t makes them feel insecure, even if it’s just for show. There’s a guy following him with a spear, like he might brain someone with a tomato. Gabriel says, so his advice is to lie? That’s his regurgitated bird wisdom? Negan says, strategic omission. Not misleading, just using the truth to manipulate things. If it’s what keeps people alive, what’s the harm?

Gabriel tells Michonne they should lock the gates for the night, and double the security. They see another streak of fire in the sky. Eugene radios Oceanside, and gets Rachel. Michonne says she needs to communicate leadership. Something of importance is about to happen.

Sea Dogs. At the beach, Aaron says, the river carried it down, and Gabriel asks if the Whisperers are back. Daryl arrives with Dog. Magna’s group pulls something out of the water with a net. Connie signs to Kelly, what’s going on? Kelly signs back, nothing, and Connie asks if it’s getting worse. Kelly signs that she’s fine. It’s just when there are a lot of voices and sounds, she can’t make out if someone is talking to her, and she  can’t predict when it’s going to happen. They hug, and Connie signs, it’ll be okay. Keep practicing to make sure she’s ready. Kelly signs, who will take care of Connie? Who will interpret? Connie signs, we got this. Them together. Being deaf isn’t a disability; it’s a damn superpower. Daryl joins them.

Ezekiel and Daryl meet on the bridge. Ezekiel asks if Daryl ever wonders why bird sh*t is called guano, but Daryl says he just calls it bird sh*t, and Ezekiel says, him too. When he worked in a zoo, birds scared the hell out of him. Lions and tigers were no problem, but an ostrich will disembowel you if you look sideways at it. Daryl says Ezekiel should eat more birds. Show them who’s boss. Ezekiel wonders what seagull tastes like, and Daryl says, not like chicken. Connie brings Dog to Daryl, and shows him her notepad. He reads, I think you lost something, and signs to Connie that he thinks Dog just likes her better. I love Dog, and I don’t want to, because this show always takes the things you love from you. Connie writes, not bad. You sign with a Southern accent.

A boat comes in. Daryl waves and whistles. Carol waves from the bow, and they dock. Ezekiel helps her off. She says it’s good to see him, and he says it’s good to see her too. They hug, but it’s all awkward. Carol goes over to Daryl, and asks if he missed her. He says, not really, and she says she’ll take that.

Daryl asks Carol, how was it? and she says, you work until you feel like your back will break, then work some more. Then sleep like the dead on deck under the stars. Daryl asks if it’s what she was looking for, and she says there was nothing at Oceanside. He says it’s been a while since he’s heard from her, and she says, fishing is hard. He says that’s not what he means. Is Carol looking for her? Carol says, no. She’s trying to forget what happened. If they’re lucky, they’ll never think about that skin freak again. Daryl says they found a mask today. They took a group out to look for signs. Does she want to join them? She says, no, and he asks what she wants to do.

Carol rides on the back of Daryl’s bike on a path through the woods. Daryl says they just cleared it out. Carol tells him, faster, and he says, hang on.

Walking again, Daryl and Carol encounter a zombie. Daryl shoots it in the head with an arrow. More pop out, and they stab the zombies in the head. I wonder if they think it’s like old times.

New Mexico. Daryl tries to shoot a deer but it gets away. He and Carol come across some wrecked cars in a ravine. The deer falls over, and Carol starts to move forward, but Daryl says, it’s one of their borders. She says they can still get the deer, but zombies are already on their way to it. Carol asks, why respect borders they didn’t agree to? The zombies fall on the deer, and feed. Carly says, that deer could have fed 200 people. I say, apparently, now it’s feeding five zombies. Daryl says, sorry he pissed her off. She is too. He says there’s no reason to start sh*t they don’t have to. She says maybe it’s just as well she left, and he says he’s been thinking about that. Why doesn’t she go home now? She sits on the ground next to him, and tells him, get off her ass before she puts him on his. Before she goes to live her life on a boat, she thinks they should have matching friendship bracelets. They can decorate them with seashells. What’s his favorite color? He’s got an idea. Eat, not talk. He shares some snacks with her, and she starts to make a bracelet out of dried grass. She asks if they should make a matching collar for Dog, and he laughs. Carol asks if he ever wonders if this is all there is. Running into people; killing each other. Sometimes she thinks they’re just surviving. Daryl says there’s got to be people out there like them. Who get what they’re doing. He asks if she wants to runaway together, and she says they can be pirates together. He says a little cabin isn’t for him, and Carly says, screw the boat. They’ll take the bike. He says, New Mexico, and she asks, what’s there? He says, people who need bracelets. No more fighting. They’ll get on the bike, and go see what’s left. It sounds good to her. She ties the bracelet. They hear and explosion, and look up.

Lines We Cross. Aaron says, it’s war, and Carol says they have to go now. Everyone runs into the woods. There are patches of fire everywhere, and they see a crashed USSR space capsule. They try to put out the fires. Earl says, it’s going to be a long, hot night. Elsewhere, another group digs a trench. Michonne tells them, keep digging. They have to get done before fire jumps the line. She hacks the head off of a zombie. Michonne and Daryl work on keeping the fires at bey while the others keep digging. The firefighting group passes buckets to each other. Ezekiel starts to cough, and doubles over. Jerry tells him, take a break. Carol says they’re out of water, and now zombies are starting to come out of the forest. Daryl, Michonne, and some of the others take up weapons. They dispatch the zombies, but more come out behind them. Then even more. Michonne gets out her machete. There’s a small herd at this point, and Daryl is like, wtf?

Embers. They just keep coming. Tons of them. Aaron says, there are says too many, but they’re stuck between the zombies and the fire. In a slow motion, the group takes out the zombies, with all kinds of blades and arrows. Eugene and some others continue to douse the fire, while zombies are slaughtered around them. Carol cuts a zombie’s throat, and blood gushes out. So much, that it puts out the fire on another downed zombie. I try not to think too hard about the fact that there probably wouldn’t be that much blood inside a zombie. Eugene tells them to steer clear, a flaming tree is going to fall. A group of burning zombies toddles toward them, and Daryl throws an ax at the tree, toppling it onto the zombies. Although this is a miniscule move in the grand scheme of zombie things, since these zombies are endless and relentless.

There’s lots of smoke, but looks like the fire is out as daylight happens. Michonne tells everyone to pack up and move. Eugene is examining the capsule, and asks if he can have twenty minutes. Michonne says he gets no minutes, and he says, ten. He thinks investigating the capsule could be useful, but uses a million words to say it. Michonne tells him, five minutes and he’s out. Luke says, hey, Eugenius, and asks what about radiation? But Eugene says, radiation is all around them. They’re already infected with whatever they’re going to get. Luke says he understands; no superpowers today. Aaron tells Michonne, they made the right choice, and it benefitted Oceanside too. Michonne tells him not to push his luck. They helped their people, and it’s all she cares about.

Carol and Daryl look out from a cliff. Daryl asks if she still wants to run away together. She says, a year from tomorrow, and he says he needs her to stay. She says she’ll think about it, and he says, otherwise, he’d have to punch holes in all them boats. He leaves Carol on the cliff, and she looks at a slate wall on the other side. She sees Alpha come out, and they lock eyes. Alpha puts her hands on her hips. Rut-roh.
