Fear the Walking Dead

Morgan gets on the radio. He says they’re looking for people. We see each of them take a turn at the mic; Alicia, Victor, John, Sarah, Charlie, Luci, and June. Alicia says they just want to help. Victor says, they want to offer assistance, but it’s not selfless. They need it too. John says, don’t be shy. If they’re hungry, there’s help. Sarah says, they’ve got beer. Charlie asks if anybody’s there. They all wait. Morgan asks again if anybody is there. Alicia says it was a good idea, but maybe they can’t make up for what they did. Maybe they’re the last ones left. Morgan knows they’re not. She tells him, dinner’s ready; take a break. They leave, and someone asks if anyone is there. They could use some help. Morgan runs back in, and says, copy. Everything’s going to be all right. Morgan asks where he is.

We see Logan at the truck stop, and it’s a mess. Everything has been thrown around everywhere, stuffing ripped out of cushions, furniture overturned; all covered with what looks like vacuum cleaner dust. Someone calls for Logan to get his ass down there. He comes out on a landing, and several people stand below him. A woman says they’ve searched every inch, and it ain’t there. Tell them where it is, or the next hole they dig will be for him.

Alicia showers the blood off of herself. Grace tells her the water is almost down, and gives her a towel. SheGrace says they need to make a move pretty soon. We hear a siren, and Grace thanks Alicia for getting the kids. She says she should have gotten them, but Alicia says she didn’t know. Grace says she didn’t look. They crashed a plane, and found the kids right away. Alicia says they’ve been doing this for months; Grace never did. Grace says she’s going to be okay, but Alicia say she doesn’t know that. Grace says she doesn’t know she won’t be. The siren means more radiation is coming than got on Alicia.

Morgan sees the coming zombie horde. Luci tells him to get to the truck stop, but he says he can’t risk it. The zombies are too close as it is. He’s going to keep leading them away. She says they have the plane radio running, and to let them know when he’s coming. She likes their chances. Morgan says, keep working. He’ll catch up as soon as he can.

Grace asks if Alicia is okay, and Alicia says she just had a hot shower, so there’s that. Morgan says they’ve got to keep moving. He listens to the siren, and says he’s starting to hate that sound. Grace says she does too, but if it stops, the real trouble begins. The zombies continue to come.

Dylan asks June if she wants to look for John, and she says, more than anything. But if they don’t fix the plane, it won’t be ready when he gets back. Dylan asks if she thinks he’ll make it. She says she’s seen a lot of bad – he has too – but he needs to know that’s not all there is. There’s got to be good too. Otherwise, it doesn’t add up. They haven’t seen whole lot of good lately, and she thinks they’ve got some coming. Dylan agrees.

Dwight and John go through a used car lot, looking for something to hotwire, but have no luck. Nothing starts. Dwight says they’ve got to keep looking. John tries to radio, but gets dead air. Dwight says they must be out of range. John looks in a car, and says, this one will work. Dwight tells him, try it, but he says he doesn’t have to. He sees wrappers from the butterscotch candies he likes on the dashboard. The car starts immediately, and tells Dwight, they’re going to make this thing work yet. They drive off.

Grace drives with Alicia and Morgan in the car, leading the zombies away. Alicia tells Morgan that she should have left them at the tree houses. She couldn’t kill anymore. She says, sorry, but he says, there’s nothing to feel sorry for. When they get back, he’ll teach her the exercises he does. They’re not just about fighting. They’re about protecting yourself and other people, even your enemies. They help him; maybe they can help her too. They arrive at the car blockade. Grace says, get down, and they all crouch inside the truck, as the zombies go by. Grace tells them, don’t move. Hopefully the zombies will keep following the sound. Morgan says as soon as they get to the first ridge, they’ll double back to the plane. Alicia tells Morgan to look, and they see a cloud from an explosion rise in the distance. Presumably from the plant. Suddenly, an errant zombie pops up at Morgan’s window, and tries to get to him. Grace backs up and out. She hits one of the cars, and gets stuck. They get out, and Morgan grabs his pokey stick, still in plastic. Morgan radios Luci, and says they’re coming, but they’re not going to be alone.

Sarah blocks Logan’s truck as he’s driving out. They both get out, and Logan asks if she’d mind moving he rig, calling her sweetheart. She notes that he has a black eye, and says if he calls her sweetheart again, she’ll give him a shiner in the other eye to match it. He assumes they want the truck stop back, and says he’s moving on. He was looking for something, but it’s not there. She says before he leaves, she wants him to do something for her friends. They nearly got themselves killed saving his ass. They’re fixing a plane, and need to find a way to light up a runway. If he hits the brights on his convoy, it will work. He says she’s asking for help, and that’s not how he operates. She tells him, the rig she’s driving, belonged in part to Clayton. She stole with her brother. Now they’re just trying to help too. That’s how they operate. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t regret what they’ve done. She’s read what Clayton wrote, and it gnaws at you. If you walk away from helping people who need it, you’ll spend what’s left of your miserable life making up for it. He owes it to them – and Clayton. He says, nice speech, but unlike his partner, he’s above ground. He’s not his sticking neck out. it’s kept him breathing, and he kind of likes breathing.

John asks Dwight, how far? and Dwight says, fifteen or twenty miles. The car starts sputtering, and stops. John can’t get it going again. He says they had a full tank of gas, but Dwight says it probably went bad. He’s noticed it before. Dwight points out the cloud in the distance. They get out of the car, and John gets June on the radio. She says they must be getting closer, and he says they are. He asks if they’re both looking at the same thing. He’s not giving up, but he might not make it in time. June asks where they are; she’ll come there. He says, it’s too far. He says he’ll do his best to get back, but asks her to promise they’ll take off whether he’s there or not. From the moment he laid eyes on her, he found a reason to live. He wants her to have a reason, whether he’s there or not. Dwight listens as he uses Shari’s words, find something to live for, and live. He says, promise him, and she promises. He says he loves her, but the sound starts breaking up, and John’s radio dies. Dwight says he’s sorry he can’t make it right, for John or anyone else. John sees a message written on a tree, if you’re reading this, it means you’re still here, and asks Dwight how far he thinks Shari’s car is.

Luci asks if June is okay, and June hands her the radio. Luci tells Morgan the wind has changed direction, and he says they need to get on the plane now. They’re closer than she thinks. She sees them running out of the woods. She says they’re not leaving until they have to, but they need help. The zombie horde emerges from the woods. Man, these zombies look tired.

Sarah tells Wen that Logan and his sick squad tore the place up. It looks like they were digging to China. He wonders what they were looking for, and she says, not flares. If she has to shoot sunshine out of her ass to make runway lights happen, then that’s what she’ll do. A car comes squealing in. Wen says they’ve got company. Daniel gets out with his hands up, and Sarah says, Dan the man? She lets Skidmark go, and he runs to Daniel. Daniel says his cat got fatter. Sarah asks if that’s why he’s there, and he says he heard them on the radio, and brought some things to help. Wen says it’s thoughtful, but unless he has spotlights in his trunk, it won’t be enough. Daniel asks him to help unload.

June tells Charlie to get more ammo. Morgan asks Grace if he can use his pokey stick, and she says it should be fine.

Victor works the controls, and asks Al if she’s ready. Al says they’ve got the engines running, and can’t wait much longer. Morgan says they’ll keep them off as long as they can. Al tells Victor that she’s glad she’s not doing this alone. Alicia makes sure the kids are buckled in. She and Victor are scared, but excited. Victor says, he’s got this. Al says they need to leave now, or they won’t have enough fuel. Victor asks if everybody is ready, and Luci says he can do this. He counts down, three… two… and June says, wait. She made John a promise, but this isn’t it. She tells Morgan to get on the plane, and he tells Alicia and Grace to run. Victor tells Al, when he says go, hit it. Morgan, Alicia, and Grace run to the plane, which opens in the back. They hear a car horn, and John and Dwight zoom up, John shooting zombies as they drive. They run to the plane and get in.

Three speedier zombies get hooked in some kind of netting hanging from the plane. One just gets dragged along, but two cling to the open doorway. Al tells them, lose the dead weight now, and John shoots them. The plane goes up with the doorway open. If this was on a big screen, I’d probably feel queasy. They go over the cloud of smoke, and John says they’re all right. Victor says they’ve got this, and everyone relaxes. Dwight looks at Shari’s ring. Morgan looks at his pokey stick. June tells John that she didn’t want to leave, and John says he knows. He kisses her forehead. Victor says, look at that, seeing the mountain. Al says it’s not the prettiest thing she’s seen since the end of everything.

The plane works surprisingly well. Alicia asks Morgan what they do now, and he says, make it back. She says, then do what? He’d said they should keep looking for people to help, and make sure others are living, but how do they do that? He laughs, and says he doesn’t know. That’s what they have to figure out. The plane shakes grace takes her belt off, and breaks the contaminated end off of Morgan’s stick, tossing it out of the plane. She gives the rest of it back to him, saying she fixed it. It was the only way. Morgan says she’s not the first person, and thanks her. June asks John if Dwight will be all right, and John says he thinks so. He wouldn’t have made it without Dwight. They found the car, but thought they hit a dead end. He saw something that made him understand that there are two ways to look everything. He thought he’d never speak to her again, and there was so much he had to say. He can’t keep going unless it’s said. He takes out a candy, and says he knows it doesn’t make sense, but would she do him the honor of becoming his wife. He shows her a ring he’s made from the gold candy wrapper. June says yes, and he says, before they die, he’s putting it on her. He does, and they kiss.

Sarah and Daniel set up numerous stings of Christmas lights, all connected to each other to line the runway. Sarah asks if he thinks they’ll see, and Daniel says they’ll know soon enough. Victor radios Sarah, and she tells him to keep his eyes peeled. He says that’s music to his ears; they’re uncomfortably low on fuel. He sees the makeshift runway, and tells the others they have to see this.

At the generator, Wen turns his chair around, and sees a zombie. He backs up toward the zombie, impaling it on the swords he can eject out of his chair. He didn’t count on the zombie being stuck on the swords, and grabs his rifle. Another zombie heads for him, and trips over the cord going to the generator, turning out the lights. I make a very loud noise. Al says that’s not good. They’re low on fuel.

All of a sudden, the plane starts to jerk. Sarah tries to get Wen on the radio, but he drops it. He propels himself out of the chair. He grabs the radio, and tells Sarah that he wants to say, if he doesn’t make it, she makes the worst beer he’s ever tasted. He loves her anyway. Sarah starts running toward where Wen is. Victor says they need the lights now. Wen crawls forward. Al says they’re going down, whether they like it or not. Wen manages to get the plug back in, and they land. It’s super rough, but they land, and they could see where they were going. Victor laughs

Morgan says, they’re all still standing. He introduces Sarah to Grace. Sarah says they can thank Dan the man for supplying the lights. Dan says he told Al not to show his interview to anyone. Morgan says they did it, and congratulates everyone. Dylan gives Luci the copy of The Little Prince, telling her it helped him a lot. Sarah asks the kids, who’s hungry? There are busted up vending machines that need raiding. The kids run inside, and Alicia runs to Daniel. He’s sorry about what happened. She is too, and says she’s trying to make it better. She thinks that’s happened. She introduces Dwight to Daniel, who says he needs a haircut. Alicia explains that Daniel used to be a barber, and Dwight says he might take Daniel up on it. Charlie hugs Daniel, saying she thought she’d never see him again. He says, after he left, his daughter Ofelia was gone, but he couldn’t let go. (#WhereIsOfelia) He couldn’t let himself say goodbye. Now he could, so he’s back, and he brought all the good records. He tells Victor that he was wrong. Victor says they all are at times.

Sarah, Luci, and Wen clink beers. Wen says it was crazy down there, and her beer still tastes like sh*t. Sarah tells him, keep drinking. It gets better.

Morgan practices with his now shorter pokey stick. A woman comes in on the radio, asking if he copies. He asks who it is, and they ask if they was his plane. He says, yes; who are you?  She says she’s heard them before, and saw their boxes on the road. He asks why she didn’t say anything, and she says she didn’t think they were real. Now she saw the plane, and knows they are. She could use some help. Morgan gets feedback, and Logan’s voice says, sorry to interrupt, but he needs to chat. A car pulls in, and Logan gets out. Sarah says, too little too late, and the group surrounds him, pointing their guns. He says, okay; that’s fair. Morgan asks what he’s doing there. He says he listened to Morgan plan to help that woman on the radio, and he has a proposition. Alicia says he’s got to be kidding.

Logan tells them, because of the hurricane, and other elements, eventually it will be impossible to cross the mountain without a plane. Clayton knew the problem was coming, and set it up so people could cultivate a resource to rectify the situation – gasoline. Clayton wrote down the location in in one of his journals. Logan thought he could find it, but he was wrong. He thinks they have it. Luci says they do. He says if they give him the journal, he’ll take them there. Luci asks, how they know it’s not a trap? Victor asks, why not bring his convoy? Logan says they’d kill him, and them, if they knew he was there. He has bad sh*t to make up for too. Alicia said trust her if he wanted help. If they want anybody to get help ever again, they have to get to them. Soon, they won’t be able to. If they want to help people, they’ll help him find it.

Next time – in three weeks – more people are found, Victor wonders if the universe is testing them, a message is found on a tree, and landmines need to be navigated. Literally.

Fear the Walking Dead

Annie washes herself up. The rest of the kids watch a cartoon and laugh. Dylan reads The Little Prince. Annie tells Max that there’s hot water. Morgan radios, and asks if everyone is okay. She says, yeah, and he thanks her for holding down the fort. He says they don’t plan on staying much longer. She asks if he understands the roads are out, and tells him, don’t go near the radiation signs. He says he knows, and she asks how he’s planning on getting out. He says he’ll show them if they open the gate.

Morgan drives in with the body of the plane on a flatbed, with a convoy of trucks behind him. He says they were honest, but didn’t tell the kids everything. They did a lot of bad things, and have done things they regret and have to live with. Things they aren’t able to run away from. It wasn’t easy getting there, but they didn’t give up. They found a way because they had something to fight for, even if it wasn’t what they thought. No one was on the end of the radio, but they still had something to fight for – each other – and them. They can do this. They’ve done the impossible before. Luci says they’ll need some help. Dylan asks what they do now, and Luci says, fix the plane. Fly back across the mountains together. I don’t suppose there are any airplane mechanics among those kids.

Morgan asks if Grace copies. He’s working on a way to get home, and found some people he thinks she’d want to meet. Near the car roadblock, Grace turns off the radio. Morgan says he’ll leave the channel open. If she hears him, let them know. Morgan practices with his latest pokey stick. It’s not satisfactory, so he looks for something else. He tries to pull the head off of a mop, and Alicia finds him. They both laugh, and she asks if he’s okay. He says he’s good, and she asks for a hand with the landing gear.

Outside, everyone works to get the plane back together. Luci asks Dylan what he thinks, and he takes off his glasses. He thinks it’s going to work. He says the book says to only see with the heart, not the eyes, so he got rid of eyes. She asks if his heart knows how to fix the reduction gear.

Oil drips on Sarah’s head as she tinkers with something. Victor says he’ll get her a rag, and she tells him to get a beer too. She works better with a five out of ten buzz. Victor tells Charlie to radio the others, and tell them it might take a minute. Annie tells Dylan that they’re there to help, so these people leave, and they can go back to how things were. June asks Annie about her ankle, and wants to look at it. Luci takes Dylan and Max back out to the plane.

June says, Annie wants to run, doesn’t she? She used to run too, but never with a sprained ankle. If she was Annie, she’d wit a week, and maybe get a new pair of shoes. And socks. Her boyfriend says, survival starts with socks. John walks in, and says, that’s a fact. He and Dwight are keeping up the search. He wants to make sure Shari is on the plane when it takes off. June tells Dwight to keep John out of trouble, and Dwight says he’ll try.

Al gets in the plane, and starts it. The propellers turn, but one starts to look dicey. Luci yells, get down! as the propeller flies off. Dylan asks if that’s the reduction gear. Al wonders where they’re going to get a new propeller. A zombie toddles onto the scene. Alicia is about to whack him with what’s left of the propeller, but Morgan gets there first, using his new mop pokey stick. He asks, what happened? and Al says, the engine worked, but the propellers didn’t. Morgan says they’ll start looking for a replacement. Grace radios, asking if they have a generator. They need to unlock it, gas it up, and get it ready for transport. He asks, what’s going on? and she says, a different plan. And if he doesn’t do what she says, there will be another meltdown.

Dwight thinks he and John are wasting time; he’s been down this way already. John says when he was looking for June, he thought she was dead, but when he met other people, things started clicking. An extra set of eyes helps you see better. He says he doesn’t mean to pry, but how did Dwight and Shari split up? Dwight says he and Shari got split up before he left where he was living. John asks how he ended up with her rings, and Dwight says, it’s complicated. John says the first time June told him that she loved him, she didn’t tell him. She spelled it out with Scrabble tiles. They never left his pocket. Dwight says he’s lucky it worked out for him, and John says they’ll find her. She’ll be on the plane. Dwight says he’s not talking about that; he’s talking about how John is, the way he thinks, how he is now. He hasn’t been broken or burned or twisted, and Dwight hopes he never is. John says he’s luckier than Dwight thinks. The world did a number on him, and gave him more than he could handle. It was hard to deal with, but he found a way.

Alicia tells Luci the generator is cooling. The system failed, and Grace needs it. It won’t fix it, but it will buy them time. They need finish the plane – fast. Luci tells everyone she’s pulling the plug, and they’re going dark. Victor says he’ll find a way to get them back. He doesn’t know how, but he will. The radio goes dead.

Sarah tells Victor, it will take too long get there, but there’s an airstrip north of where they are. She radios Wen, and asks if he remembers the airport where they jacked the planes. Victor isn’t optimistic, and Charlie says Victor told them they’d find a way. He says that was just to keep their spirits up. Sarah asks is he d*cking about daisies (a phrase I have never heard), or are they closing the deal? She thought he wanted to help them. Charlie says, so did she. Sarah says they’ve got the pieces, they just have to put them together. Victor says, it’s hopeless. Sarah says, Jimbo took one for the team; he took one hard. Don’t throw that hopeless horsesh*t in the air, and let it land on them. There has to be a way. Charlie asks Sarah if they got everything from Jim’s brewery. She shows Sarah a picture of Jim in a very busy add for his beer. Sarah says, son of a bitch. They’re going to get out.

Morgan meets Grace, and she asks for help moving the cars. She has to suit up and go in.

Al asks if June has heard anything from John, but June says he’s out of range. Al hopes the plane’s circuits aren’t fried. June asks if Al is okay, and Al says she should have kept the helicopter from taking off; they’d be home. June says, no way could she have done that. She asks if something happened when Al was missing. Al shakes her head, but I think June knows better. June says she asked to talk to Al once off the record, and Al let her talk. It helped her, more than Al knows. If Al needs to do the same, she can. June tells Al it’s the least she can do. Al sort of smiles, and says she has to check the battery.

Annie asks Alicia if the woman Morgan left with is from the power plant. Alicia reluctantly says, yeah, and Annie tells the boys, it’s not working. They can’t stay. Alicia says they can’t go back to hiding behind the dead. Annie says they were safe before, and Alicia says they can be safe now. Luci needs all the help she can get to finish the plane. Dylan says he can work, and Max agrees, but Annie says he’s not the one who has to decide. Alicia says they can make the decision together, but Annie says she has to decide for her brothers.

Dwight and John find a dead guy inside an empty diner. Dwight says he saw the guy the last time he was there. He’s been dead a while. Dwight points out that he was shot twice; once by the person who stole his food, and again by himself. John asked him why Shari doesn’t have her ring. She had to give it up to save him. She chose to give up everything for him. The only reason he’s still alive is because of her. He owes her his life. When he left where he was, he was sent away. The person who sent him knew the sh*t he’d done, but knew he loved her, so he said, find her and make it right. Even if can do the first thing, he doesn’t know if he can do the second, or if it’s even possible. John thinks more things are possible than impossible. He takes a food ticket down in the kitchen window. He finds a pencil, rubs it over the ticket and sees the note Shari left, that had been obscured by blood. Dwight is impressed, and John says he used to be a cop. I miss what the note says, but Dwight says he’s been looking down the wrong road the whole time. (I cheat, and check another recap – Shari said there was a storm coming, so she’s switching to country roads.)

Annie packs some cans of food. Alicia asks if the kids are just going to leave like they did before. She says there’s no way they can carry all that, and suggests they take one of the cars – if Annie tells her why they won’t go. Annie says Alicia won’t change her mind. Alicia says, then it won’t hurt to talk about it. Annie says they lived at the camp; her parents, her brothers, and a dozen other families. They found it after everything changed, and it was perfect; like it was built for what was going on. Alicia asks, what happened? and Annie says, a herd of growlers followed them back from a scavenging run. They took certain routes, and did other things to be careful, but they weren’t careful some of the time. That’s all it took. There were so many, and they didn’t look like regular growlers. The growlers were from the power plant, but they didn’t know it. More showed up, but the walls held – at first. The grown-ups got weapons ready for a fight, and when it looked like the walls were about to give, they sent the kids away. They had a spot in the woods that they were to run to, if things went bad. She took the kids there, and they waited; eating and crying in the dark. They tried to stay quiet. They’d done it before, and the grown-ups would come after a night or two, but she just knew. They waited and waited, and after three nights, she went back on her own. Alicia says, she saw them? Annie shakes her head, and says their parents weren’t dead. They killed all the growlers, but they were sick. Her mom and dad wouldn’t even let her come in; they had to talk through the door. They told her not to be afraid, and said they’d get better. They made her promise to stay where they were, and protect her brothers and everyone else. So that’s what she’s doing. Alicia says she gets it; she really does. She thinks about the last thing her mom said every day. Annie says so she understands why they can’t leave. Alicia tells her, just make sure she’s doing what they really asked. Annie asks what she means, and Alicia says, is she surrounding them with the dead to protect her brothers, or is it easier than surrounding herself with the living? Alicia sets the car keys on the counter, and says, all hers. It’s up to her whether she wants to use it. Annie watches Alicia leave. Man, I’d stick with Alicia. She’s pretty badass. Kind of like Addie on Z Nation, but not quite as cool.

Dwight looks at the car registration from Shari, as he and John go toward a cabin. He says she might still be there. John checks the car, while Dwight goes inside. John looks in a knapsack, but it’s empty. He checks the glove box, but nothing. He opens another compartment, and there’s an envelope with an eternity symbol on it. Inside, the note says that Shari had to kill someone. The man at the diner. He almost killed her. They’ve both seen too much, and she doesn’t like the thought of him looking for her. She doesn’t want him to get killed trying to find her. She wouldn’t be able to live with that happening. She asks him to stop looking. She gave him hope, but she wants to give him a chance to get out. This is the end of her trail. It’s the end of them. Don’t let it be the end of him. So he should find something to live for, and live. She’ll love him forever.

Morgan finds his old pokey stick wrapped in plastic, and Grace is like, no. He says the man who taught him how to use it, helped him when he thought death was the only way. He thought if he held the weight of it, he’d know what to say to help those kids – and her. To show them they’re not stuck. But it feels like a piece of wood in plastic. Grace says, wood that can hurt him, and he puts it back. She says she’s not stuck. It’s just over for her. He says she doesn’t know that’s true, but she says she has to do this. She has to give them more time. He asks where the other suit is, and she says, there isn’t one. She gets in her car, and locks it, saying, he can’t come. She’s not letting another person die because of her mistake. He says, there has to another way, but she says, there isn’t. He’s kind and thoughtful, and learned from his mistakes. She’s doing the same thing. She thanks him for helping with the roadblock, and drives away.

Luci find Alicia sitting in a car, and asks if she talked to Annie. Alicia says Annie thinks it’s all on her. She thinks she’s the only one who can protect them. Luci asks if Alicia is leaving, but she doesn’t know. Victor comes through on the radio. Luci answers, and he says, the dulcet tones of a songbird. She asks, where is he? and he says he told her he’d find a way. He’ll see her soon. They’ve got the props. Luci asks if they found a road, but he says, a road isn’t a necessary ingredient to this journey. Look up to the south. We look up to see Victor and Charlie in a hot air balloon, and I literally lol. It’s a huge bottle of Jimbo’s Augie beer. Victor says they’re clearing the runway as they speak. He radios Morgan, and asks if he sees it. He does, and Luci tells Alicia, the kids need to see this. Alicia runs in, but they’re gone. Alicia says, they took off. Morgan says, they need to find them quick. Grace is buying them time, but not a whole lot.

Dwight comes back out, and tells John that Shari wasn’t in there. He found food and supplies though. She was there. John told him when he met the others is when things started clicking with finding June. She’s close; he knows it. He says, she would have left a letter, and asks John if he found anything in the car. John says, no, like I thought he would. Dwight thanks him, and says it’s the closest he’s been to finding her in a long time. It’s everything.

Morgan asks Victor, how long before they touch down? Victor says sooner than he’d hoped. They’re low on fuel. Charlie tells Morgan to come and get them. Morgan asks if they have enough to clear the trees, and Charlie says they’re trying. Victor pulls on the ropes. Morgan tells him not to bring it down there. It’s not safe. It’s contaminated. Victor says, it’s the only way, and the balloon is gone.

Alicia goes to a blockade of the dead in the woods. She calls for Annie, Max, and Dylan. We see a zombie with its intestines hanging out. She radios Morgan, saying, she’s going in. She takes out her weapon. Morgan says, him too. He says if Victor and Charlie can hear him, stay where they are. Don’t kill any walkers. If their blood gets on them, they can die. He trots down the road.

Victor and Charlie see zombies filing out of the forest. Charlie tells Victor, stay away from the walkers. Which IMO, should be easy since they move so slow. The zombies stumble forward.

Next time, Morgan says they’re going to do what they came there to do, Alicia finds the kids, and Victor says they have to make a hasty retreat.

💒 What Fresh 90 Day Hell Is This…?

Interesting how I’d always thought Chantel, Pedro, and the families that go with them, often seem like they’re reading their lines. Maybe Pedro and Chantel were originally set up by Pedro’s mom Lydia, but perhaps the audience was set up too. The two families hate each other, so now they’re going to create a show together? Makes perfect sense. It also looks like the ever tired-looking Lydia, who jabbered about how no one was interested in a green card, will be looking for one.

Fear the Walking Dead

We flash back to when Al found the maps. She’s being carried in the rain, and wakes to find her hands tied together. She sees someone in the same uniform as the person she got the maps off of. They light a flare. Al scrambles up, grabs her knapsack, and runs. When her captor realizes, they follow. Al falls down a small hill, but manages to get the knapsack open and finds her camera. A zombie toddles toward her. She heads into the creek and falls, but rights herself. More zombies start to come.

Her captor continues to follow her, and she continues to run. She stops, seeing a group of zombies, and shoots at them. Her captor knocks her down. Unmasked, the woman says, the camera, holding a weapon in Al’s face. Al opens the knapsack. and shows her there’s nothing but the case. The woman asks, where is it? and Al says something I can’t decipher, but it’s probably bullsh*t.

Imprisoned in a car, Al bites at her ties. She sees a field with barbed wire fencing. I wonder, what happened? Did her captor have to pee? Al gets the door open with her foot, and yells, hey, baldie! to a zombie. She tells him, come here. He gets to the car, and she keeps kicking him back until she can grab the piece of barbed wire stick to him. She uses to get herself free, then smashes his head in the car door. No good deed goes unpunished, even for a zombie.

Al wonders what the hell the woman is protecting. She goes deeper into the woods, past a curtain, and sees a clearing with a helicopter sitting in it. She starts it, but it’s out of gas. She tries to radio Morgan and Alicia, but as the radio crackles, her captor finds her, and says, get out. Next time, handcuffs. Over the radio, someone asks if ground 17 copies. The woman drags Al out of the helicopter, and answers. She says the helicopter needs to be refueled. She hears that in 72 hours, a reclamation team will be sent. Al asks, what is that? and the woman holds a gun on her, but doesn’t answer.

The woman asks where it is; show her and live. She kicks Al’s leg out from underneath her, and says next is breaking a leg. Al says doing that will kill her. She’s not telling the woman sh*t. She refuses to show the woman where the tape is, and says her friends are stranded, and need a ride. She must have lost someone, but doesn’t seem upset. Al asks if the woman is going to kill her too? The woman says she just wants the truth. Why is Al out there? Al asks, why is she? The woman says, the tape first, but Al says, no. The woman says she needs fuel.

The woman packs up a bag. Al asks where they’re getting fuel, and the woman says there’s a fuel drop. Al asks if it’s high up, and the woman says, it’s for a helicopter. Al asks, how high up? The woman says there, and looks at the mountain range behind them.

They drive, and Al asks, what’s on the map? What’s with the symbol? Why did the woman get out of the helicopter? She knows the woman doesn’t want to tell her sh*t, but they have deal with each other. So she’ll start with the basics. She asks everyone, what is their name? where are they from? and what have they seen? The woman is silent, and she says she has to call her something. She’ll call her Happy. She says, Happy, let’s get to it. Where is she from? Happy asks why any of this matters, and Al says, when they’re gone, their stories are all that’s left. Some rocks tumble down into the road along with a zombie. Happy tells Al to wait, and gets out of the car. Al also gets out, saying she doesn’t take orders from Happy. Happy gives Al her jacket, saying she can’t afford for Al to get bit. Al starts saying again that she doesn’t take orders, but a zombie is getting closer. Happy says, Al wants to get transactional? Everything she does is to insure that more stories are left after they die. Al takes the jacket, saying if Happy wants her alive, it will take more than a jacket. Happy says she’s got them, and bayonets each of the zombies in the road. Rocks fall down onto the car and bury it. Al says, don’t stay in the car. That rule has kept her alive before people started eating each other’s faces.

Happy says they’ll have to walk, and gets her gear out of the car. Al grabs her camera bag, but drops it. While she’s trying to grab it, and zombie pokes it’s hand out of the rubble, followed by its head, and bites her arm repeatedly. Happy says if she wasn’t wearing it, she’d be as good as dead. She digs in Al’s bag, and Al tells her, be careful. Happy finds a tape in a secret compartment, labeled, The Bog, but Al says it’s not the one she’s looking for. Happy draws her gun, and Al says she might want to watch it before spraying her brains all over. Happy puts it in the camera, and it’s Al from the last time we saw her, saying there’s a story there, and she’s going to get as much as she can. The picture goes blank for a moment, and then we see her hiding. She says the National Guard is at the East Bridge. The Army is there too. They’ve declared it a national state emergency, and cordoned off the entire area. She has to go. Then she says the Army is in one direction and the National Guard in the other. They’re shooting at each other.

We’re with her for a moment. Al says she should have stayed, and the film stops. Happy asks, what is this? and Al says, it’s not included for the transaction. Happy says she could have been killed. Why do that for a tape? Al says she couldn’t say goodbye to her brother, so she got his story instead. He’s dead; his story is all that’s left. Happy says, thanks for sharing. Al takes off the jacket, and asks why Happy killed her partner. Happy says, if you see someone wearing that jacket, be afraid. They’re a force not living for themselves or now. Al has her stories; they’re about making the past. They have the future.

They walk together to a clearing where there are a bunch of junked cars. Happy looks inside one, and picks up a map of Texas. She looks in the back, and sees all kinds of gear. She says it looks like they’re not the first to make a climb there. Al says, no roads are passable. People could have been trying to get out, and could still be up there. They need to keep their eyes open. Happy asks if Al is good with heights. Al says nothing, and Happy says, answer her. Al says she’s answered plenty. Happy says they can make camp. It’s dark soon, and they’ll climb at the crack. She tells Al, get some sleep. She’ll keep watch.

Al sits in the tent. Happy joins her, and zips it up. They sit in silence. Al says she’s never told anyone what she just told Happy. Happy says they’re the same kind of bird. Al had a job and kept doing it, and it mattered more than people’s lives. Her too. Al asks why Happy killed her team member. She says she was just doing her job, and didn’t mean to piss in Al’s. Al’s stories matter, but some things matter more to her.

They start climbing. A zombie totters back and forth beneath them. Happy says if they don’t trust each other, they’ll end up like him. Al says if she falls, Happy falls. Trust her. Happy tells Al, follow her lead. I’m not good with heights, and this mountain is like straight up, and giving me a queasy feeling. I’d be hanging onto my chair if this was on a big screen. The come up to a zombie hanging from a harness. Happy says they’ll have to go by him. It’s the only path. She needs Al to climb over the anchor for the final push. Al starts moving sideways, and Happy is pretty close to the climber zombie. Happy slips, and I say, f**k! She’s hanging by the harness, and Al’s anchor starts to slip. She tells Happy that she needs slack. Happy kicks out, and grabs onto the side of the mountain. Al says she’s good but the anchor has cracked. Al inches toward the zombie. I’m making all kinds of noises at this point, and saying words I don’t normally say. At least not to the TV. She grabs his tool – no, not that one, some kind of multi-purpose thing, and stabs him in the neck. She unhooks herself, and moves along the ledge. She can quite reach his rope, and I’m dying. She swings over, knocks him out of the way, and hooks on. Happy can’t believe it. Al says, you fall; I fall.

They lie down at the top. Happy says, he was her friend. Al says, she killed her friend? Happy says, they were doing what they always do; getting supplies. Get in, get out. Al asks, supplies for what? and Happy says, purifying water. They found a nuclear power plant, and took every precaution. It was timed perfectly. They were on their last run, when Beckett saw what radiation did to the dead, and he cracked. He was afraid he’d end up like them, and he did. She kept this a key to a cabin he’d always talked about. It has a view to the ends of creation. Happy says she sees that every day, and tosses it off the cliff. Al asks why didn’t she let him go? and Happy says, nobody walks away. let alone with the maps he carried. She hesitated, and thought of mediating the fear, but protocol is to extinguish threats. She shot him. Her friend had to die. Al says Happy wants to tell her everything, but that means she’ll have to kill her too. Happy says, no. She needs Al’s help. Al says if she leads Happy to the tape, she’ll have to kill Al for operational security. Happy says, yeah, she does. They look out at the view from the mountaintop.

At the fuel drop, they find a zombie. Al says he didn’t make it far. Happy tells Al, stay, so she follows. Happy pikes the zombie, and Al grabs her from behind and knocks her down, taking her weapon. It’s a combo-thing, with a gun and a bayonet-type trident. Al says she told Happy that she didn’t follow orders. She’ll hang onto Happy’s weapon. Her operational security. She asks if there’s enough fuel, and Happy says enough for the chopper to get up and get her where she needs to go. She’s not flying Al’s friends out, even if Al gives her the tape. Leaving her there would be a bad idea. Al says she’s got food and water; she’ll manage. They’ll go home. Happy asks if Al has every flown an L-3, and Al says she’ll figure it out. Happy says the reclamation team will be there in 24 hours. She doesn’t want to be anywhere near the helicopter. Just don’t be. Find another way. And even if Al isn’t giving her the tape, she has to destroy it. Al asks, why? Happy says, she wants an interview? Let’s talk.

Where she’s from, she’s not telling Al, but it’s something that will be bigger than her, Al, all of them. Al says, they’re the future, and Happy says she and Al are the past. If someone finds the tape, they could figure out the map, and it makes what they’re working toward vulnerable. She needs the tape. It’s not about her or Beckett, but the future they’re rebuilding; what they once had. Happy says she’ll die there if she has to, but if Al doesn’t destroy the tape, Beckett’s death and her death won’t amount to anything. Al wants her brother’s death to mean something. Stories matter, but they have to make sure there are people around to hear them one day. Al says she’ll show Happy where the tape is. She asks how long they have there, and Happy says, just the night.

The build a fire, and Happy breaks out the beer. Al says, they have beer where she’s from. Happy says she left that out. Al asks if they have a brewer. One of her friends is trying to be one. They share a bottle, and Al says, not bad. Happy says it would better if they’d met before this. When the sun comes up, sh*t gets real. Al gets it. They watch the fire. Al says, everything’s so ugly nowadays. This is nice. I say,  hmm… is that a spark between them?

Al wakes up, and Happy says, let’s go. They have to hurry. Al takes Happy to the creek. She says she had to be sure someone could find it if Happy killed her. Happy pats down a corpse, and says, so she put it on one of the dead? Al says, not that one. Happy pikes a poor soul struggling to come out of the creek. Al takes a bag out from the pocket of another. She gives Happy the tape. She asks if Happy wants to check it, but Happy says, no. She puts gunpowder on it, and lights it. They watch it burn, and Happy stomps the remaining flames out. Al says, that’s it.

Happy says, the tape is only part of the story. The mission… no one can even see them. She tells Al, turn around… please. She holds a gun to Al’s head. Al says however long it takes Happy to pull the trigger, she knows she tried to do something with the story. She gets it, and wants Happy to know that. She can contribute if she does something for Al. She tells Happy, take this, and gives her The Bog tape. She says, make sure the story matters. Al turns and waits to be shot, but Happy says she wants Al to live.

Happy says, don’t chase this story. Do not try to find her. She hopes Al gets back to her friends, and they get home somehow. Her name is Isabel, she’s from Indiana, and she’s seen the prettiest thing since the end of everything. They kiss, and I almost cry, it’s so touching. They walk out of the woods together, but go in separate directions at the road. Isabel kills a couple of zombies in her path, as she carries the fuel.

Isabel puts the fuel in the helicopter. She radios that she’s refueled, and ready to return. A voice says, the payload? and Isabel says, yes. Everything according to protocol. They say she’s cleared for return. She looks at the tape Al gave her, and sort of smiles.

Al sees the helicopter go up and out. She sighs, and radios Morgan. Morgan asks where she is.

Al waits under a tree, and Morgan and Alicia arrive. They hug, and Morgan asks how she is. She says, all right, and Alicia says they’ve been looking everywhere for her. Al says she got overrun by the dead. She ran into the woods. Morgan says she told them there was a story, but she says, no. It was just a weird lighting trick in the camera lens. Alicia asks if she saw where the helicopter came from, and Al says she tried to get in there, but was too late. Alicia says she’s just glad Al is safe. Morgan says they’ll find their way out – hopefully. It’s not just them. Al says, more new people, and Morgan says he’ll tell her on the way. Al sees the others ahead, and says a last name too fast and long for me to type. Morgan and Alicia look at her, and she says it’s her name. She had two Polish parents who insisted on double-barreling. She just thought she should tell them. Alicia looks at Al like she’s five, and smiles. They continue on.

Next time, all the kids join in, Dwight joins the group, and Morgan says they can do this.

June 23, 2019 – Daniel’s Plane Comes In Handy, Alas Adieu, Spotted & Triple Monday

Fear the Walking Dead

Daniel listens to the blues. He puts Skidmark’s collar on, and tells him, let’s add to the collection. Skidmark takes off and barrel races some zombies in a parking lot. As they get distracted by the cat, Daniel stabs them in the head. He pops open the door to an empty store. There’s gunfire, and a zombie falls out. He turns it over, takes keys off of their belt, and says, thanks for the car. He loads the car up with supplies, and tells Skidmark, three traps to check, and they’re going home.

The record ends. Daniel puts his guns back in the rack, and puts away the supplies. He takes a page off the calendar, and sets it on fire in the grill. He puts a can on the grill, and heats up some chili. He puts the record back on. I guess he likes this song. Daniel eats, and shares his plate with Skidmark.

On the radio, Sarah asks Victor, what if he finds Charlie? but Victor says, he won’t. Charlie was at the stadium for weeks before they found her. Charlie sneaks around some cars, and sees a covered plane. Victor radios Charlie, and says, when he leaves, open the gate. Skidmark hangs with Charlie. She opens the hangar, and Daniel calls for Skidmark. Charlie gets in the back of Daniel’s car. He puts some guns in the back, without seeing her hiding under a blanket. He goes back in, and she tells Victor, he’s gone. Victor says, get out of there. but she says she can handle it. and gets back under the blanket.

Dylan looks at The Little Prince, and Lucy says she gave the book to someone his age once, and it helped them both through tough times. John tries to get June on the radio, but has no luck. He says they’re still looking for Shari. Alicia says she and Morgan are going into the woods; the web of the dead has to be on the other side. Dylan says, they’re not in the woods. Alicia says, they? and Dylan say they saw them when they first came and set up camp. Alicia asks why the kids didn’t tell them, and Morgan says they don’t have to be afraid. He shows Dylan a map, and asks where the camp was. Dylan points, and Alicia says they’re going to find their friend, and find the people who did this. Luci says she’s going to fix the CB, get Victor, and see what’s up with the plane. Dylan says he’ll help. The sooner they get the plane, the sooner they can leave, right? Luci says, the sooner they can all leave. Morgan leaves with Alicia.

Victor uncovers the plane. He says it’s not his color or style; he prefers a G-4, but she’ll fly. He’s going to load her up, and bring her to his friends. He goes inside to check out the controls, but there are none. On the radio, he asks where the six-pack is. Sarah asks if he’s talking about brew or abs; although he won’t find either. He says, the instrument gages. He needs them. He sees a note on the windshield that I don’t understand – something about canal 8. Daniel is on the radio, and Victor takes out his gun, asking where Daniel is. Daniel tells him, relax; he’s nowhere near the warehouse. If was there, he would have made good on his promise. Victor wonders how he knew, and Daniel says he knows Victor. He was right. Victor hasn’t changed. Sarah gets on the radio, and says she knows Daniel’s got a beef with their friend, and it’s justifiable, but why not give them the plane, and let them be on their way? Daniel asks who this is, and tells Sarah to stay away from Victor. He has a talent for hurting anyone near him. Victor says he hasn’t hurt anyone, and Daniel says he sent a child to do his dirty work. He tells Charlie, show yourself, and Charlie sits up. Victor says, if he hurts her… Daniel says he’s not going to hurt her. He’s going to save her from Victor.

Sarah asks if Victor is going to sit there like a turd in a toilet. He could be talking Daniel into giving them the plane. Wen says it’s hard to talk with your head blown off, but Sarah says that’s not happening to anyone. She asks if Victor is giving up because Daniel doesn’t think he changed. They need to keep cranking, and get that bear in the air. They need to get Charlie; and get everyone else. Victor says he can’t fly the plane without instruments. Wen says the instruments have to be somewhere. Don’t make him look by his lonesome. Victor laughs, and says, come on. They join him, and look through the lot and warehouse.

Charlie asks where Daniel is taking her. He says he’s not going to hurt her. She says he shouldn’t blame Victor. Daniel says he knew what he was doing, and Charlie says, he has his reasons. Daniel says she’s a child, and he knows better. She looks at a map that he’s labeled Collection. She asks if he set up the traps, and he wonders if she’s been watching him. She says, no, and he says he didn’t. She says he’s been disarming them: why? He says she asks too many questions, and puts come music on his boombox, placing it on the dashboard.

Dylan asks Luci what the book is about, and how can it help? She says, a pilot crashes his plane in the desert. He finds a prince who’s left his planet, and is traveling from place to place, Dylan asks why the prince left, and Luci says, to learn things, and meet new friends. Dylan asks what he what learned, and she says, to look beneath the surface, and not be afraid of the unexpected. She tells him that if he wants to talk, he can talk to her. He goes inside to get tape for her, and radios Annie and Max, He says, ollie, ollie, oxen free. Max asks if he’s alone, and tells him, be careful. He says they cut down more growlers by the gas station. Dylan says the people they met didn’t do it. They’re just trying to find their friend. Annie says, who did this then? In the distance, they see someone in a uniform and helmet dispatching zombies, and they hide under some bushes. Luci comes in, and sees Dylan just standing there. He says he couldn’t find the tape. Luci says, it’s in the back. Let’s go.

Daniel stops at a bodega, and tells Charlie, wait there. Skidmark comes with him. He looks into the store, and zombies press against the other side of the window. He tells Skidmark, this one going to be tricky. Charlie is there, and says he can slip in the back way, throw something like a can of artichoke hearts – no one ever takes those – and he can get what he needs while she covers him. That’s what she used to do when she was on her own. Sometimes she would use music to distract them. Except she didn’t kill people to do it. Daniel knows what she’s thinking, and says he didn’t do this. He inherited the warehouse from someone who did kill, so things could sit on a shelf. She asks, why are those things still there? and he says, it’s hard to find people to help these days. She says, that’s not true. One came to his door asking for help. Now go find artichoke hearts.

Daniel tries the back door. It’s locked, and he messes with the lock using a knife. Skidmark looks in the front window, and the zombies gather. He jumps onto the ledge, agitating them more. He moves to the other window, because the writers want to give me a heart attack, since we can never have nice things on these shows. Inside, a zombie sets off a rigged machine gun, and the windows shatter. The zombies walk through, Charlie and Daniel run to the car. Daniel calls for Skidmark, who jumps inside. He says, one day he’s going to leave Skidmark behind, and they take off.

Charlie asks Daniel how much ammo he has, and he says, half of what it would take. He doesn’t want to draw more of them. They can outrun the herd, but it’s going to grow, and he needs to stop it. He’s going to lead them to the warehouse, and pick them off one by one.

Alicia and Morgan get to where the campground is supposed to be, but there’s nothing. Alicia thinks Dylan must be confused. Morgan says, he’s been though a lot, and she asks if Morgan thinks he’s telling them everything. He calls Luci, and says they’re at the coordinates Dylan gave them, but there’s no camp, and no sign there ever was. They’re going into the woods. He says if John and June come into range, have them meet there. Dylan says, no. Go to the old utility road. Morgan asks, what’s there? and Dylan says, just go. Morgan says they want to make sure what happened to Annie and Max doesn’t happen again, and Dylan says, they’re not dead. They lied. He lied. They faked whole thing. Morgan asks, why? and Dylan says they were scared. He’s sorry, but they need help. Please? Morgan is like, dammit!

Annie and Max wait. Max asks if it’s clear. Annie thinks they left, and peeks out. She doesn’t see anything, and tells Max, okay. Release the bond. He lets go of the rope holding the zombie roadblock, but the first zombie turns around and knocks Annie down. A cluster of zombies looms over her, and Max pulls her out. They get away, but she’s limping, and their gun gets left behind.

Charlie radios Victor, and says she’s fine. Valentin asks where the instruments are, and Charlie says with them. Daniel asks if Victor thinks he would leave them where Victor could get them. Victor is begging him. Their friends lives are in danger. He asks Daniel to bring the instruments back, and Daniel says, they’re doing that, but they picked up some friends. Charlie says, there’s a herd behind them. Daniel tells Victor, make sure the gate is in place. If they have to, they’ll climb over. Sarah says, there’s a bit of a hole – about 36 feet wide. They had to break the fence to get the bird out of its cage. Charlie asks why Daniel is laughing. He tells her, he said he would help, and they’re going back like this. Instead, he’s putting their lives at risk, the same thing as Victor did. He stops the car, and asks if Charlie knows how to drive. She says, kind of, and he tells her to take the instruments to Victor. Take the plane, and go. Charlie doesn’t want to leave Daniel, but he says her friends need help, and they can’t be helped without the plane. He’ll take care of the herd. She asks, how? and he says the same way she used to. He gets out, and takes the boombox with him. He tells her, go, and she gets behind the wheel.

Daniel leads the herd, and Charlie watches in the rearview mirror. It’s lucky this herd isn’t too fast.

Victor says, Daniel just handed them over? She says they would have led the walkers there, and Victor says Daniel would have hurt them like he hurt Daniel. Sarah says they’ve got to get that bear in the air. Victor gets Daniel on the radio, and Daniel says he’s sorry about what happened. He’s sorry he tried to kill Victor. Victor is sorry Daniel is in pain, but if he’s putting himself in danger to teach Victor a lesson, don’t. Daniel says Victor still thinks it’s about what he did to Daniel at the dam. Victor asks, what is it about then? and Daniel says the same thing it’s always about with him – lies. Alicia asks what he means, and Daniel says, tell them how he kept Daniel from Ofelia. Victor sighs, and Daniel wants to hear him say it. Victor tells the others that Daniel got separated from his daughter. Victor said he knew where she was, but he lied because he needed something from him. When Daniel finally got to her and found her, it was too late. Daniel says Victor wasted time he didn’t have. He couldn’t tell her what he wanted her to know. Charlie asks what it was, but he says, it doesn’t matter now. Charlie says they can’t just leave him. Victor said he wanted to help people. Here’s someone they can help.

Max and Annie limp through the woods. Annie says they can’t outrun them, and stumbles. The zombies bear down on them, but Morgan and Alicia come up behind them, and pike the zombies in the head. Annie asks how Alicia and Morgan found them, and Morgan says their brother said they were in trouble.  Alicia says he was worried about them. Annie says they have no idea what’s going on. Morgan says they’re not going to hurt them, and it’s just the four of them now. Suddenly, a bunch of armed kids surround them, and cock their guns, pointing them at Alicia and Morgan. Annie says, it’s not just them. Morgan throws his stick down.

Daniel walks down the highway, leading the zombies. Victor says he’s sorry. He’s not asking Daniel’s forgiveness, just a chance to show Daniel that he’s not that man anymore. Let them help him. Wen says he’s been itching to bring down the hammer for some time now. They’re coming in hot. Daniel looks in the distance, and sees Al’s truck barreling toward him. It stops sideways on the road, and the gun window opens. Daniel runs to the truck, and Sarah says, now! Wen pulls the lever, but nothing happens. She says, again! but it’s the same result. Daniel bangs on the truck. Sarah opens the door, and kicks at the zombies, but there are too many. Daniel slides underneath. Sarah tells Victor, they’ve got a problem.

A flatbed truck carrying the plane joins them. Underneath Al’s truck, Daniel stabs zombies in the head, one by one. He’s lucky they haven’t figured out a way around the other side. Victor gets out of the flatbed, and tells the zombies to come that way. They move toward the flatbed. Victor gets into the plane, and starts it up. The zombies begin walking into the propellers, and get sliced up. After there’s no zombies left walking, the engine quits, and the plane is covered in blood.

Victor helps Daniel up, and gives Daniel his hat. Daniel says he’s not going to shoot Victor in the face. Victor pats him on the back.

Luci lifts the communications tower back up, and thanks Dylan for helping. Annie radios, and asks what Dylan told them. He says, they’re telling the truth; they just want to help. Annie says, that’s stupid, but Morgan says they can help each other. Alicia asks them to please put down the weapons. Max appeals to Annie, and she nods. The kids lower their guns. Morgan says he thinks the people who were there before, the people who scared them, are the ones who took Al. Who are they? The offer still stands. They just need to know where Al is. Max says they can help find Al, but they can’t leave. Alicia asks, why? Morgan says the people who are back at the camp are their parents, right? Annie says, they were, and Morgan says he’s sorry.

Daniel burns another calendar page, and heats up a pot of something. Charlie asks what Daniel was going to tell his daughter. Daniel says, every day brings a chance to start over; a chance she has to get it right. Something tells him that Charlie needs hear it too. She asks where he’s going. He says there’s a reason he’s been on his own this long, and he needs to take care of it. She asks if he wants company, but he says her friends need her. He tells her that he set the record player up, and asks her to look after Skidmark. He says they’re welcome to stay until they find their friend. Consider everything theirs, except this. He takes a cigar from Sarah, and says a friend wanted him to save it until things get better. He nods at Victor, and leaves.

Before going out the door, Daniel looks back, and watches them eating. Skidmark jumps on the table, putting his face in everyone’s plates, and Victor pets him.

Luci gets radio going, and calls Victor. She asks how it’s going with the plane. He says he managed to help someone using it, but in doing so, the engines were damaged beyond repair. He wishes he had better news, but they’ll find a way to bring Al home. Dylan tells Luci, the pilot crashed in the desert. How did he get out? She says, he fixed the plane. He put it back together, and flew away. Dylan says, if he could do it, so can she.

Annie explains they had weapons and uniforms. They saw two, but there could be more. Alicia tells Morgan, this place isn’t safe. Morgan says he and his son stayed after the point they shouldn’t have. Alicia is surprised he has a son. He says he couldn’t bring himself to kill his son’s mother either. She asks their names, and he says, Jennie and Duane. Max says, wait. He hears something. He tells everyone, get down! and they all fall flat. A wind blows through, and Max says, stay down. A helicopter rises above the trees. Alicia asks, what the hell was that? Annie says, it’s the people; they came back. Max says he didn’t think they would.

Next time. Al doesn’t know how much longer she can stay, but she’ll get as much as she can. Al kicks ass, but takes no names – only videos.

🎭 Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow…

I was saddened to hear Franco Zeffirelli has gone to that great director’s chair in the sky. Best. Romeo, And. Juliet. Ever. I also loved his film adaption of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, Brother Sun, Sister Moon. His work was incredibly beautiful.

🔎 Sightings…

Crystal R. Fox (Hanna, The Haves and The Have Nots) is playing Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) mother on Big Little Lies this season. And just from hearing his voice for two seconds on the preview, I spotted Colson Domingo (Victor, Fear the Walking Dead), who will be Ali in the second episode of Euphoria.

Fear the Walking Dead

Alicia pikes zombies, while Luci circles X’s on a map. John knifes zombies in the head, and June cuts through the rope between them. Alicia gets Morgan on the radio. She tells him she’s by the turnaround. John says, there’s nothing new, but they’re keeping their eyes peeled. Luci says the roadblocks form a pattern, and John says they’ll figure out a way in. Morgan loses the signal. Luci says something about a gas station, but starts to break up. John and June come across another chain of zombies blocking the road. He says, these kinds of warnings mean serious people are on the other side. June says they’re serous people. John thinks the chances of finding Al are less and less as time goes on. Shots are fired at them, and John and June run back to the car. John says they don’t want any trouble. They manage to get inside the car, but the back window is shot out. John wonder who the hell that is, and Jun says, serious people. John says they need more firepower. Their luck just turned again.

Zombies climb a windmill tower. Tumbleweeds blow through a Western-type ghost zombie town. John and June get out of the car. She asks what this place is, and John says, his old stomping grounds. Welcome to the Gulch.

A sign says, welcome to Humbug’s Gulch. John thinks there might be a dust storm coming. June ask if he used to work there, but the wind is so loud, I don’t hear what he says, but the town is basically a tourist thing that had actors; not a real town. They come to a building that says Brothel, and John says this is where they find the weapons. The wind blew them where they needed to be. June asks if it ever blows somewhere else, and he says, no. They go inside, and upstairs. John tries a cabinet, but it’s locked. While he messes with the lock, June looks through a rack of clothes. John gets ready to shoot the lock, telling June it’s his last round, but she sees a key on the dresser. He opens the cabinet, which is full of guns and ammo. June thinks they’re good.

Alicia asks Luci how she’s doing, and if she can move her arm yet. She can’t, and Alicia apologizes for what happened. Luci says there are words and actions, and they took action. Alicia says they crashed a plane, but Luci doesn’t regret getting on it. Alicia tries to radio the kids, and tells them if they can hear her, get back to the van. Alicia hears Annie saying not to talk; they’ll hear. Alicia says they want to help, and Annie asks what’s wrong with her? Leave them alone. Alicia asks where are they? and Annie tells her, if she says, they’ll find them. Alicia asks, who? and Annie tells Dylan to hide. They’re cut off. Alicia says they can’t leave.

June radios Morgan and Luci, but gets nothing. She asks John how long thees things last. He thinks they can make it to the car if they hurry. She asks what it’s like if you get stuck in it. What if they don’t make it? He says it’s like midnight, and you can’t breathe. Maybe they should wait it out. He says they can load up in the meantime. He starts looking for things they can use, while June has a beer and some snacks. She picks up a Western show program, and asks if he was a good or a bad guy. He says he didn’t get into theatrics; his talent was trick shooting. She asks about the different tricks listed in the program, but he ignores her. He says they can’t just wait here. June says they can’t help if they don’t make back, but John says they can, and they go back out.

Someone starts to shoot, and they duck behind a building. John yells, hold your fire! They see the tires have been shot out on the car. Someone at the end of the street continues to shoot at them, and John shoots back. He and June run. Getting distracted by a Wanted poster, John turns back, and finds a gun in his face. It’s Dwight from The Walking Dead. He says, where is she? Answer him. June comes up behind Dwight, and clonks him in the head. John thanks her, calling her June Bug, and she says, not yet. They have to get him inside.

An unconscious Dwight is tied to a chair. John says whoever he’ looking for, he’s been at it some time. He looks through Dwight’s stuff. He says that’s a helluva burn, and asks if June thinks he had it before/ He’s all worn down looking for some woman. Maybe he cracked, and got confused. If he’s a killer, he’s in no shape to kill anyone. June says he’s someone who genuinely needs their help. They notice the wind has died down, and zombies are gathering. John says even if they pick them off, they’ll attract more attention, and eventually run out of ammo. Dwight starts to wake up, and John tells him, easy. June says it’s okay. Dwight tells John not to touch his stuff. John says they don’t mean him any harm. He asks who Dwight is looking for, and June says she has to treat his wound. John says whoever he’s looking for must be important for him to point a gun at Johns’ head. June reminds Dwight that they could have left him out there. John says they’re looking for someone too. They can compare notes, not trade shots. He asks if Dwight knows who’s responsible for blocking the roads, or what’s on the other side. He thinks whoever Dwight was looking for might have been trying to get away from some bad people. June says they just want to help, and Dwight says they can’t. No one can. The whole place is screwed.

Dylan tells Alicia that they’re near the fireworks stand. Morgan says he can’t raise John and June on the radio. Alicia says she knows what she should have said to those kids. Alicia and Luci hear a bang, and they run off the road. Morgan asks if they’re okay. Alicia gets out. She sees that one of the tires is flat, and she’s run over a board that has nails sticking out of it. Luci says, someone doesn’t want them there. Alicia says that’s means they’re getting closer. Morgan tells them stay where they are. He’s coming. Alicia tries to call the kids, but gets no response. She tells Luci, let’s go. Morgan will catch up.

Zombies claw at the door, and John says, it can only hold for so long. June asks if there’s another way out, and he says, the roof, but then they need to hoof it out of town. Dwight says his car is at the end of the street. He’ll give them the keys, and they can take it. Go. John says he’s coming with them, but Dwight says he can’t. He put a gun to John’s head. John says maybe he’s being presumptuous, but it seems Dwight has been separated from someone as dear to him, as June is to John. They didn’t always have the good fortune to be together, and John went to a dark place. He shot a man’s finger off because he thought the man knew what happened to June. If he hadn’t found her, he might have done something worse. Although the guy was a disagreeable a-hole. They can help each other. Who is he looking for? Dwight says, his wife; her name is Shari. Dwight, John, and June introduce themselves. John shakes Dwight’s hand. Dwight says if he can have his gun back, he promises to point it at something other than them. June says he’s going to need it.

They get the player piano going, and slip upstairs. Attracted by the music, the zombies bust in, and more pour in from outside. June, John, and Dwight go out the windows above the awning, which isn’t too steady. Dwight jumps down, and John is like, what? Dwight rolls around on the ground for a moment, and shoots a zombie. He tells John, get to the car. John drops down, and June keeps watch. Dwight tells John that he calls the zombies walkers. June runs to where there’s a wagon below, filled with laundry bags. She jumps into it. Dwight chops a zombie in the head with an ax. You can tell he’s in a lot of pain. John and June head for the car. These zombies are kind of fast. Dwight hesitates, and then goes in the other direction. June and John get in car, and June asks where Dwight is.

He’s sitting in the car John and June came in. He pulls all kinds of paperwork and maps out from behind the visors, and out of the glovebox, obviously looking for something. Zombies start to clamor at windows, and Dwight is like, sh*t. John calls him on the radio. Dwight picks up the walkie-talkie, and John asks what the car has to do with Dwight’s wife. Dwight says that’s why he came at them. It was her car. He tells John that they should go. He’s gotten them in enough trouble. John tells him, stay calm. He looks at the back of a car registration, where West on 30 is written. He says when his wife moves to a new place, she leaves him a message. He thought he’d find one in the car. The last one was on a registration, but there’s nothing in there. It’s been at least a year, and there have been a lot of dead ends. He asks where they found the car, and John says, it was at a campground. Dwight says, tell him, and June takes the walkie-talkie. She says, there wasn’t anybody there alive, but that doesn’t mean she’s not out there. She and John were somewhere else. Dwight looks at his gun, but I figure he’s not going to shoot himself, since they took the trouble of transferring him to this show.

Dwight tells them, go, but June says they’re not leaving him like this. He says he’ll get through, and John says they’ll find her. He found June. Everybody said she was dead. Dwight says he’s gone halfway across the country, and he’s always two or three steps behind. He thought maybe she just got a head start or he missed a message or two, but now he starting to see it. June says he doesn’t think he deserves to find her. He says he’s not like them. He did things… things they can’t imagine. June says, they all have. Dwight says he’s still doing things. He tried to kill them because he thought maybe they’d done something to her, but they didn’t. There was nothing to find, and he might have killed them for nothing. It doesn’t matter if he’s alive or dead; he’s never going to find her and make it right/ That’s who he is now. June says, just don’t be that person. Giving up is just as bad… John tries stop her, but she says, he needs to hear this. He’s giving up because he thinks he doesn’t deserve his wife. She did the same thing; she ran from John. Dwight says, this is different, but June says, it’s not different. John almost got killed finding her. Shari is still out there, and if he’s choosing to believe she is, that looks like she hasn’t given up. And if she hasn’t, how can he? The cluster of zombies scrabbles at the windows and drools, looking at Dwight inside the car. Dwight cries a little, and says he can’t get back to them. He won’t be able to. John says, leave that to them.

Alicia asks if the kids copy. She and Luci walk down the road, and Morgan pulls up with a truck. He says, anything? and Alicia says, either they don’t want to answer, or they can’t. Morgan says, they could still be listening, so keep trying. Talk to them. She radios, saying she has to tell them something she should have told when she was with them. She lost her mom and her brother. She knows how much they’re hurting, and how scared they must be. Not because she’s been there, but because she’s there now, and wants them to know they don’t have to do it alone. If they’re listening, tell her where they are. Her group can help. The kids might not believe it, but she promises if given a chance, they will. She gets silence. Morgan nods. Alicia says, let’s go.

John sets down his bag, and takes up his rifle, and June backs him up. John starts shooting, and says, come to me. Dwight shoots a few zombies through the back window. John keeps shooting, taking out a handgun with his other hand. June’s gun won’t work, so she whacks a zombie with the butt of the gun.  John keeps shooting. Dwight gets out of the car, and uses the butt of his gun to hack a zombie in the forehead, but the zombie falls on him, and he’s pinned. What’s left of the zombie crowd around his car notices. John runs to June, who says she has one shot left. He grabs her gun and tells Dwight, raise the ax; hold it. He shoots the ax head, and the bullet ricochets off, killing the two zombies closest to Dwight. He frees Dwight from the zombie trapping him, and tells June, that’s a San Antonio split. They help Dwight up, and John says that’s only the second time he pulled that off.

Inside, John looks through Dwight’s stuff from the car, while Dwight carves a message into the wall. John says it wasn’t her car. The VIN number on the registration doesn’t match the car. She could be out there, or left a message in the car she was actually driving. John says he used to be cop. Law enforcement is a thing of the past now, but he’s trained. It serves a purpose once in a while. Dwight thanks him.

John tells June that he went by Six Gun Sam when he occasionally took part in theatrics. She kisses him. and he thanks her for what she said to Dwight. She says, he needed to hear it, and John says, he did too. He’d been questioning what he has, and why he deserves it. He couldn’t share his feelings, and by doubting it, he was taking it away from them, and neither one of them wants that. Morgan arrives with Luci and Alicia.

Morgan asks, what is this place? and John says he used to work in a place like this. He didn’t know the dividends were going to pay. Dwight comes out, and says, Morgan? June says, they know each other? Morgan says they come from the same place. Dwight tells Morgan that he’s following Shari. When her trail hit Georgia, everything seemed to drive her this way. He wants Morgan to understand what happened, but Morgan tells him that he doesn’t have to say it. Not now. He knows how it ended for Dwight. They’re all trying to start over. Morgan asks how long Dwight’s been stuck there, and Dwight says, longer than he’d hoped. Alicia asks if he knows what’s keeping them away with the blockades of the dead. He says he’s only been able to go so far. He can show them.

They go to where some dead are chained together as a blockade. Dwight says he tried to make his way around them, but they’re strung up everywhere. It’s as far as you can walk. Alicia says, not for long, and they all take out their guns. Alicia’s radio comes alive. It’s Max, and Alicia says the group came for them. They’ll be okay. He says they got the message, and they’re on their way to them. They’re at the truck stop. Everyone stops what they’re doing, and they leave.

Alicia smiles, and says, it’s starting to feel like they’re on the right track. Morgan believes they are. Luci suddenly says, what’s that? and Morgan says, it’s the van the kids were driving. Alicia says, no.

The same kind of ropes that were tying the zombie blockades together, are wrapped around the van. They cut the ropes off, and find a blood-covered Dylan lying on the backseat, barely conscious. Alicia asks where Max and Annie are.

Elsewhere in the woods, someone ties up a zombie, and checks out a map. Annie asks Max if he thinks they bought it, and he says, definitely. She says, Dylan might crack, or they might figure out why they’re here, and who took their friend. Annie says they have to make sure they’re never bothered again. She says he sounds scared, but he insists he isn’t. They leave, having put together another zombie blockade.

Next time, Victor uncovers a plane, the cat still lives, and Victor tells someone to open the gate.

🐩 Come On, Baby, Do It For Mama…

I would be remiss in not mentioning this week’s passing of an amazing actress. Midnight Cowboy is one of my favorite movies ever, and I love the story about Maureen Stapleton thinking Sylvia was a real hooker.

📡 Although it will never happen, I try to get my money’s worth of the too much I spend per month on the 500+ channels, most of which I don’t watch. This weekend, I was able to catch The Hate U Give on HBO. I don’t really review films, but it’s worth seeing. It’s well-written and thought provoking, the acting is superb, and the end both heart- breaking and hopeful. Catch it while U can.

💍 I’m loving the insanity that is the 90 Day Fiancé franchise, even though I have to watch in bits and pieces, due to FWD and NOS4ATU competing on Sunday night. If you haven’t seen the latter, it’s another brilliant piece of work, and Zachery Quinto is scary as hell. My favorite thing about 90 this season is the addition of Pillow Talk, where the nicer people who have been on the show (there are some couples, but also friends and relations), watch the episodes featuring the worst couples, and comment on them. I literally lol my way through it every week. The only thing I like more than watching TV, is watching someone else watch TV. I’m not sure what that says about me…

Hoping all the father’s out there had a wonderful Father’s Day, and the rest of you had a weekend filled with whatever takes your fancy. Alas, Monday morning and work come all too quickly, so enjoy the beach on me. Just ignore that dude with the dark sunglasses.

The Walking Dead

Ezekiel speaks into a radio. He says, it’s finally broke and they can’t fix it. They kept trying to hold on, but things fall apart. We see them trying to fix broken pipes, water spewing everywhere. He continues, the cold set in, the fires raged, the rot spread. We see the entire place is a mess. He says, there’s no one left to keep fighting. They have to know when it’s over; if only for now. They need help. Shelter. From the storms to come.

Daryl gives Lydia a plate, and tells her that she should eat something. In a voice over, Ezekiel says they’ll never forget the magic they felt in this place; the love. Carol goes through a memory box, Henry’s drawings, a birthday card, a tiger pin. She wipes tears from her face. Ezekiel continues, the acts of courage. Cowards die many times before their deaths. He looks at the constitution they signed, and touches it. The brave taste death but once. He blows out the candle, and all is dark.

Michonne and Aaron lead the people from the Kingdom out, some in a covered wagon, some on horses. Ezekiel holds the gate open, and they all go through. He and Carol close the gate, and Ezekiel mounts his horse. He says, as they head into an uncertain future, they must be valiant. All of them together.

While walking, Michonne talks to Yumiko, asking if the council has had no security resolution. Have they heard nothing from Maggie? Yumiko says, the council sent another letter, but they haven’t heard back. They see some spread out zombies in a field, and a dude whose name I don’t remember tells Lydia her people are watching them now. They followed the rules; isn’t it enough? Daryl tells him, lay off. Lydia says he doesn’t have to protect her; she started this mess, but Daryl says it doesn’t mean they get to talk to her like that. She doesn’t want to cause more problems. He says it’s their problem, not hers.

A quarter zombie makes growly noises, and they continue on. Daryl tells Carol, Henry wanted Lydia there when no one else did. She’s a good kid. Carol says every time she looks at Lydia, all she sees is him. Daryl asks what she sees when she looks at him, and Carol says, him. Jerry says they got a mother of a storm coming. Ezekiel says they’ll have to travel through the night, and get to a waystation before it hits.

In Alexandria, Rosita tells Gabriel, both the heaters are dead. He suggests keeping each other warm. Eugene comes in, and tells them all of the heat sources are in bad shape. Their best bet is an old school winter. Ezekiel says they’ll divide up, and go to the buildings with the largest fireplaces. Rosita says, they’ll stock up on firewood, keep toasty, and wait it out. Ezekiel says they can’t leave Negan; he’ll freeze. They have to let him out.

Two snow dusted zombies come out of the forest. Daryl shoots one, and Carol shoots the other. Ezekiel tells everyone to keep going; he and Daryl will catch up. Lydia lingers on the side of the road. The group walks past, and she’s gone.

Daryl pulls his arrow out of the zombie’s head. Ezekiel asks if he’s given much thought to his plan after this. Daryl asks, why? and Ezekiel says the past few months have been difficult for him and Carol. They could use a fresh start. He suggests Daryl stay at Hilltop, saying it would be easier if it was just them. Daryl asks if he thinks that’s what Carol wants, and Ezekiel says Carol wants the same thing he does. She wants to hold her son again. He’s not trying to be the bad guy. He just wants to get back a piece of what he lost; what they lost. After everything that’s happened, does Daryl think he can give them that? Daryl walks away.

Lydia goes through the woods. It’s cold and snowing. She sees a zombie stuck in the frozen lake, its head, upper chest, and one arm showing. She approaches it, and its jaws snap. She takes off one glove, and pushes her sleeve up. She puts her hand out. Its mouth gets close. She closes her eyes, and a tear rolls down her cheek. Carol sees her. They look at each other. The zombie is obviously frustrated.

Jerry tells Ezekiel, even if they haul ass overnight, they’re not going to make it to the shelter. They need to find a waystation. Ezekiel asks if anyone has a place in mind. Michonne says, yeah. Carol comes back with Lydia.

The group goes inside a building. Magna says, people actually lived here? Michonne says, welcome to the Sanctuary.

Sitting in a big room in front of a fireplace, Negan says he’s memorized every square inch of this room, and it still feels like a party. Rosita says, a party from hell. He says it smells like a barn, and they’re bored sh*tless – Judith says, language. He says, sorry, and continues. They have this hot love quadrangle to entertain them; it’s like Christmas. He asks Gabriel, since his girl’s doctor is also her baby daddy, does he wonder what’s going on when she has appointments? Gabriel says he could be less predictable, and Negan says, that hurts. Gabriel says they’d never let it ruin their long-standing friendships and mutual respect, and Negan says, that is a very mature attitude, Father Not the Father. Siddiq tells Judith not to stand so close to the window. Daryl said to take care of her until they got back to Hilltop, and they don’t know where he is. Negan asks if anyone smells something. Siddiq tells him, stop being an a-hole, but Rosita says, he’s right. Something smells funky. Eugene yells, get away from the fire place! And something causes a small explosion in the firebox.

Eugene says it’s as he suspected. He says a whole lot of complicated words very fast, which I take as meaning there was gunk in the flu, and they can’t build another fire if they still want to breathe. Negan says he missed Eugene, but Eugene can’t say the same. Siddiq says, without the fire, they’ll never get warm enough. Rosita says they should leave before the temperature gets any lower. Gabriel asks if they have a contingency plan. She says Aaron’s house. It will be tight quarters, but they’ll make it work. Negan asks if not one of them is going to untie him, and Rosita says they can tell Michonne it was an accident.

They bundle up and form a line. Eugene opens the door to a beginning blizzard.

Carol snoozes on the steps. A fire has been made in the Sanctuary. Daryl sits next to her, and offers her his flask, but she shakes her head. He says they’re going to make it, and she nods. She asks if something happened with him and Ezekiel, but he says, no. Carol says Ezekiel blames him, because can’t let himself blame her. She feels like she’s losing herself again. She’s trying to hang on but doesn’t know what she’s doing. She cries a little. Daryl says he could take her away. Keep her safe on his own. She asks if he wants to go, and he says, no. What does she want him to do?

Ezekiel breaks wood for the fire. He says, the snow has never hit this hard this early. It could last days, and they can’t; not there. Maybe he could bring back some supplies from a waystation. Michonne says she thought of that, but they could get caught in the storm, and end up worse off. She wants to see a map, and points out a waystation across the river. Aaron says there’s no way they can make it in these conditions. Carol says they need a bridge, but the creeks and ponds are frozen over. They can probably walk across it if they don’t all go at once. Michonne shows them it’s a straight shot. Carol says they didn’t agree to the borders; they’re hers, not theirs. Ezekiel says they don’t know how fight them yet, but Michonne says if they cross at night, they won’t know. Yumiko says they could be watching, and Daryl says, all the more reason to go. Ezekiel says not the elderly and children. They can’t take horses and wagons over the ice. Michonne says, on foot is risky, but they’re low on food, and the storm could make the roads unpassable for weeks. Unless they make it to a waystation, they’ll die.

Michonne tells Ezekiel, sorry. She wishes there was another way. Ezekiel wants to do right by them. The Kingdom fell. He should have seen it coming, and had them go out sooner. If it wasn’t for him, they wouldn’t be there. She says, if not for him, they wouldn’t be there at all. The time they spent apart, she thought it made them stronger, but it didn’t. That… woman was able to walk among them because they didn’t know each other. They can’t let it happen again. They’ve come too far to give up the Kingdom. The Kingdom hasn’t fallen; it’s right there. The charter they signed means something. These people aren’t just his; they’re theirs. And they’re going to get them home. Ezekiel says if their seen crossing the border, it could start something. She says they’ll make sure they don’t.

The group starts walking. They come to the pikes where the heads were, and pause. They continue on.

The blizzard gets worse. They hold to each other. Judith hears Dog barking in the distance, and runs after him. Negan runs after her.

Ezekiel holds up his hand to stop. They see shadowy figures ahead, and Daryl shoots. Nothing moves. They move forward and see it’s zombiesicles. Michonne cracks their frozen heads off, and they shatter. Daryl signals to keep moving. They’re at the water, and Daryl says he’ll go ahead to check it out. Lydia hangs on the outskirts. Daryl tests the ice, and thinks they’re good. Ezekiel tells them, assume eyes are on the border. He tells Daryl to get others the ready. Daryl asks where Lydia is, and Carol says she’ll find her; get everyone across. Ezekiel says, let’s move. A zombie pops out of the snow behind Daryl. Another grabs Ezekiel’s ankle. This is not good.

More come out. They’re everywhere, grabbing at everyone. The group keeps moving, and zombie heads get stabbed. Daryl shoots at the ones coming out of the forest. Michonne works her katana. Someone asks if it’s them, but Michonne says, no. Jerry says, get them across, and gathers Nabila and their children.

Carol finds Lydia in a shelter, and asks what the she’s hell doing. Lydia doesn’t know, but knows she can’t cross the river. She knows what’s on the other side. The same thing as on this side. It won’t make their problems go away. It won’t achieve sh*t. They think it will make it better. If they hadn’t taken her, all those people would still be alive. Carol’s son’s is dead because of her. Henry said she was a good person. She shakes her head, and says, he was wrong. As long as she’s with them, it will never stop. She says Carol knows she’s right. There’s only one way to fix this, and she sees it. It can be Carol. No one else has to know.

The zombies keep coming out of the snow, and out of the forest. One gets Daryl down. He struggles with it, and it’s so close to his face. He throws it off, and grabs an icicle, stabbing it in the eye.

Lydia begs Carol, saying everything will be better when she’s gone. She takes the end of Carol’s pokey stick, which looks like it has a giant drill bit on the end, and points it at herself.  She says, this is how they keep from losing anyone else. She begs Carol, just do it. Lydia is sorry it has to be her, but it does. She’s too weak, like her mother said. Carol’s eyes fill with tears. She strides past Lydia, and jabs a zombie instead. She tells Lydia, she’s not weak. They have to go. She takes Lydia’s hand.

The storm gets worse. It’s hard to see and hear. For me too. Negan falls. He yells, but doesn’t see Judith. Dog barks, and Judith comes out with Dog; she has him tethered, and Negan picks her up. He doesn’t know what direction to go in, but Dog leads them. Good Dog. Negan sets Judith down behind a shack, and gives her his coat. He says something about nuggets – chicken nuggets? what? –  but I can’t hear above the wind. He’s hurt, and ties his leg with a piece of his shirt. He tells her they’ll get out of this, picks her up, and moves on.

It’s morning. Ezekiel and the others arrive at Hilltop. There’s a frozen zombie out front, and Daryl shatters its head. Lydia looks at a painting of Herschel. Jerry says Hilltop can be the new Kingdom, and wonders if they can make Kingtop a thing. Daryl tells Lydia, try to get some sleep. They head to Alexandria in the morning. Lydia says Hilltop seems nicer, and Daryl says, it is. She asks why he left, and he says, one day; try to get some sleep. Carol looks out the window. Ezekiel stands behind her, and says, they made it. She says, did they? She’s going Alexandria with the others. Ezekiel knows she has to do this, but he won’t ever stop loving her. She takes off her ring, but he won’t take it back. She doesn’t regret anything. He leaves, and she cries quietly.

The breakaway group gets to Alexandria, where Judith is waiting for Michonne. Michonne asks her what happened, and in typical kid fashion, Judith responds with, it’s cold. Michonne hugs her little boy. Daryl throws snowballs. He and Lydia play with the kids. Everyone joins in.

Siddiq tends to Negan’s wound. Michonne comes in, and he says, look who’s here. She thanks him for saving Judith. He always did have a flare for the dramatic. Negan says the last time they were there together, Rick had slit his throat open. This ain’t nothing. She’s a special girl, a damn spitfire, and Michonne has been through enough. Michonne tells him, get better. He says, Doctor Baby Daddy says they got caught in the storm with the royalty brigade. Is everyone okay? She says, does he care? He says he doesn’t know them from Adam, but he knows what it’s like to lose a kingdom, and see things fall apart. It sucks ass. Michonne says, the Sanctuary is a sh*thole now, and he says he could have told her that. All she had to do was ask. So they cut through their territory; ballsy. Michonne pulls up a chair and sits. She says they don’t even know if the Whisperers knew they were there. The point is, they came together and made it. Negan says, a common enemy, a common goal, and Michonne says, or facing evil brings good people together. Negan says, same thing. Except no one ever thinks they’re the evil one.

At the Whisperers camp, the most boring place ever, Beta tells Alpha the time away was good for the pack – and her. Alpha says, it has, but she made mistakes. Mistakes she can’t make again. Beta says, and she won’t. She’s strong. She says she needs to be, for what comes next. Beta says, she will be. She holds out her arms, and he whips her. She takes it like a man, and even smiles a little.

Ezekiel says they’ll make it through this winter of discontent. When the snow melts, and the winds quit, who knows what glories the summer may bring? We see he’s talking to Judith over the radio, and she says, maybe they’ll come back to the Kingdom. He says just because they’ve left the house, doesn’t mean they’ve lost their home. She says she’ll tell her mom that he said hi. Over and out.

After Ezekiel leaves the room, the radio crackles. A voice says, is anybody out there?

🔊 Melissa McBride (Carol) made a good point on Talking Dead tonight – Carol got to keep the ring. They also called the drill bit thingy on Carol’s pokey stick a rebar. Good to know. I guess.

🎬 Because I Still Pay So Much For Cable…

I try to actually watch those 500+ channels I get robbed pay for. This weekend, I took a look at Venom. Like Deadpool, it was better, and funnier, than I expected it to be. In a nutshell, a reporter doing an investigation on a dicey scientist’s experiment, merges with an alien, and becomes an anti-hero. I was surprised to see Escorpion (Emilio RIvera) from Z Nation show up, and there was also a very amusing cameo toward the end too. No spoiler, in case you haven’t seen it. Even the end credits were well done, although I haven’t seen a more obvious plug for a sequel since The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Leaving that channel roll, I then caught a 2001 offering, Down – otherwise known as The Shaft. I’m not making a joke, that’s how IMDb lists it. You wouldn’t think elevators would be that creepy, but late at night in a big empty office building, they are. The familiar faces didn’t stop coming in this one. Mr. Tortelli, and the head vampire from The Lost Boys (Dan Hedaya and Edward Herrmann, respectively) Ron Perlman, and one of my all-time favorites, Michael Ironside. Who still can kick ass at nearly seventy years old. It was as Oscar worthy as Sharknado, but it had its moments, and it’s great if you don’t want to think too hard. Especially when the source of the killing is revealed. What was that? you’ll be saying to yourself. The best way to describe it is like The Poseidon Adventure, but inside an elevator, and without all the water.

The Walking Dead

Miles fights off a zombie in the woods, when Hilde pops out and finishes it off. She tells him, happy anniversary. He asks, where’s his present? and she says she found something she thinks he’ll like. She parts some trees, and shows him Hilltop.

Wooden coins are being made. An H is carved on them.

Hilde gives Miles one of the coins. She tells him, happy anniversary. It’s been five years. The H is for Hilltop; home. He says she should make more; people will love them. It’s a symbol of hope, and people always need more of that. They’re headed to the fair. They put some things in a wagon, and two guys get in back. Hilde tells Miles that she’s going to trade the coins for the perfect gift. He’ll see. She puts a carved chest, also carved with an H, on her lap.

A mess of belongings litters the woods. Hilde lies dead in the rubble. Alpha sings as she scalps Hilde. Wooden coins are scattered everywhere.

Ezekiel speaks to the crowd. He stands before them today at the start of a new tomorrow, made possible by the sacrifices of many over the years. A man with a mission to build a community, and strengthen the bonds between them. It took too long to create what Rick and Carl Grimes envisioned. Jesus brought them together, but they’ve always been bound to each other. They fought their way back to each other. The river crossing might be gone, but they rebuilt a bridge. The crowd applauds, and Ezekiel continues, they’ve reunited, not against a common enemy, but for their common good. He tells them, eat, drink, trade, and be merry. They have a lot of lost time to make up for. Jerry announces, the First Annual Inter-Community Reunification Fair begins. Ezekiel says, too many words. Let the Fair of New Beginnings begin. Fiddle music plays.

Carol tells Ezekiel that he sounded good. He feels it’s his duty to go with her; he’s Henry’s father. She says, he’s also the king. It’s bad enough she’s leaving. If they both go, the people will wonder why. He put a month’s work into the fair. The Kingdom needs him; his people need him.

Kelly tells Magna her sister is out there. Magna says, no, she’s not. The gate opens, and Daryl, Michonne, and the other come through. Carol hugs Henry, and tells him that he can’t ever run away like that again. He promises he won’t. Ezekiel joins them in a three-way hug. Carol hugs Daryl. Ezekiel sees Michonne, who says she was in the neighborhood. They shake hands. Carol asks if Judith remembers them. Judith says she’s been drawing pictures of them since she was little. Caroline of the Kingdom. She says Carol’s hair got long. Tara notices Lydia, and says, the plan was to bring Henry back; just Henry. Michonne tells Ezekiel, gather the leaders. They have a lot to talk about.

Michonne tells the leaders that she hasn’t always seen eye to eye with everyone there, but she never stopped caring about them. She was trying to protect her family, and do right by her people. Alexandria’s future is there; together with them. She lost sight of that, but she’s here now; they’re here now. Gabriel says the council took an informal vote, and the council members are willing to grant asylum to Lydia. She’s one of them, and he hopes they’ll join them in considering her the same. Lydia thanks him, and says she’ll do whatever she can to help. Tara says Lydia’s mother will come after Hilltop, not Alexandria. She has to do right by her people. She thought they were on the same page. Michonne says she wanted Lydia to run away, and when she didn’t, Michonne was angry. But she knows why that’s not okay. She knows why Rick didn’t trust her at the prison. She knows why he didn’t trust Tara when she was on the other side of the Governor’s fighting line. A representative from Oceanside (not Cyndie) says she was going to kill her Tara when she washed up. Tara says, fair. Michonne says, Lydia didn’t choose where she came from, but chose where she wanted to be; just like everybody in this room. Tara says Daryl is right about the skin jobs. They don’t have enough people. Daryl says he’ll get a group together to protect Hilltop, and Ezekiel says they need to gather any spare fighters. Carol says they should go today. Gabriel says it’s a short term solution, and Michonne says they have to present a united front. An attack against one of them, is an attack against all of them. Gabriel says they’ll make the Whisperers think twice about going against Hilltop. Everyone agrees, and Tara asks how they seal the deal; spit shake, blood oath? Ezekiel says he has just the thing, and brings out Michonne’s constitution. Michonne wonders how he got it, and Tara says she might have taken a few things when she left. She did what she thought was right. She’s sorry about the way it went down. Michonne thanks her, and says she was right. Tara says, her too. Ezekiel says he never doubted it for a moment, and signs. His signature is huge, and Gabriel says what I’m thinking – John Hancock. Ezekiel says, eat your heart out. Carol signs Queen Carol. The Oceanside rep (Rachel Ward?), Tara, and Michonne sign. Michonne gives the pen to Gabriel, saying he’s head of council. He signs, and there’s a mini Declaration of Independence tableau.

The fair continues. Lydia walks with Henry. Enid answers medical questions. Earl talks to people about his trade. Eugene harangues Judith from a dunk tank, and she hits the target, dunking him. Lydia asks Henry what they’re going to do with all the stuff; how will they have room. Henry says, they just do; it’s how people express themselves, and asks if she sees anything she likes. She doesn’t know how to answer that. Daryl walks his bike toward the gate. Lydia says she should go too. They’re in danger because of her. Henry says, because of him. Henry wishes he could go, but Ezekiel says he just got there. He expects to see them both at the movies, and Lydia gets excited, saying it’s unexpected. Carol says she’ll get used to it. She tells Henry to go; she won’t leave without saying goodbye. Ezekiel tells Carol, their son is taking a date to the movies tonight. Carol says, everything he said sounds completely possible.

Luke and Alden are arguing, and Luke tells Enid, technically, he lost a bet. He’s playing guitar, and instead of just Luke, he wants it to be Luke and friends. Enid says she wants to hear her crooner boyfriend croon. He is her boyfriend, Isn’t he? Alden says he is. Luke says, congrats, and suggests they get back to their task. Alden says Luke lost the bet, but Luke says Enid wants to hear him sing. Alden says he’ll think about it, as he walks away with Enid.

Connie signs to Kelly that she’s never seen Luke excited. She asks Kelly, what’s wrong? Kelly signs, you left without saying goodbye. Connie puts her hand on Kelly’s arm, but Kelly shakes it off. She signs, any goodbye could be the last. Her sister ran off. Connie didn’t think. They were going to let the baby die. It brought back a lot of feelings she’d thought she dealt with, but guesses not. She just pushes it down. Kelly says she gets it, and hugs Connie.

Michonne tells Siddiq she’s leaving. He says she just got there. He can take her place if she wants to rest, but she says, stick with the plan. She tells him to enjoy the fair, and keep an eye on Judith. Don’t let her be too hard on Jerry. They watch Jerry play horsie with the kids. Siddiq says Judith is more experienced than anyone. Michonne asks, how come? and he says he’ll tell her when he sees her at Hilltop.

Addy asks Henry if he’s got a second to come with her. She’s sorry for ratting him out, that he was in the clubhouse. She didn’t want to get him in trouble, and only caused more. Henry says, everything worked out the way it’s supposed to. Lydia watches from a picnic bench. Gage and Rodney approach her. They tell her they’re friends of Addy’s. Addy has a thing for Henry, and by the looks of it, he has a thing for her too. They’re a tight knit community, and hope she doesn’t plan on causing problems. Lydia gets up and walks away.

Tara says maybe they should go together, but Dianne says, if they go now, people would notice. Tara says she has some details to hammer out, but can join them tomorrow. She thanks them for volunteering, and says, be safe. Michonne hugs Judith. Magna and Yumiko tell Luke goodbye. Connie writes, be safe, to Daryl. He says, her too, and asks her to feed Dog. I might note that Dog goes off with her, tail wagging, not even looking back at Daryl. Man’s best friend.

Henry thanks Daryl for keeping them out of trouble. Ezekiel tells Daryl that Hilltop’s door is always open to him. They’d be honored if he’d consider calling the Kingdom his home. He says he’ll think about it. Carol hugs Henry. She knows Ezekiel has a lot on his mind, but tells him, enjoy the fair. He deserves it. He says he won’t enjoy anything until she’s back. They kiss.

Daryl leads on his motorcycle with the others on horses and in a horse drawn cart behind him.

The Highwaymen work hard, wiping out zombies. Ozzy tells them to double back. Daryl and company arrive, and Ozzy says they were clearing the roads, and spotted tracks. He shows them the mess from Hilde and Miles, and Magna says they’re from Hilltop, but Ozzy says Hilltop didn’t do this. Magna says, the skins? Do they know them? Ozzy says, strange times, strange ways to cope. That would be his guess. They put up a fight, and were drug this way. Daryl says they can’t rush in, but Dianne says they could be alive, but if they were followed, the whole community is in danger. Daryl suggests they split up. Carol says she and Michonne will go with Daryl; the rest go to Hilltop. Ozzy says she’ll owe them a couple of movies when they’re done. Magna asks Yumiko if she thinks they survived. Yumiko says, they came back. She tells Magna they have to go and make sure. They’re just splitting up for now. They kiss. Surprise relationship! For me anyway. I didn’t read the graphic novels.

Darkness has fallen. The group continues through the woods. Daryl finds a bloody stick. Carol says she doesn’t know if there’s a happy ending here. Daryl thinks they should head back. They hear zombie noises, and shoot a couple of them with arrows. More come at them, and Michonne chops with her sword, while Carol stabs them in the head with a knife. They turn to run, but another bunch of zombies block they’re path. They’re surrounded. Carol looks panicked. They slice, dice, stab, and chop. It looks like the zombies are all are down, but more come out of the forest. They put their backs to each other, forming a circle. There are zombies all around them, one with a gun. Beta tells them to drop their weapons. He won’t ask twice. He says they just had to give him the girl; no one else had to die. Now that deal is done.

We peddle back to Daryl and the group leaving Hilltop Jerry tells Nabila that he gives Michonne props. He can’t believe she came. A woman with long blonde hair looks around. It’s Alpha, cleaned up and disguised with Hilde’s hair.

Rosita goes to Eugene’s workshop, and asks where he’s been, and he says she must have missed him at the dunk tank. He’s been making ham radio parts. If he can get it up and running, it will allow them to talk to each other. Despite their distance and differences, it would be nice to communicate. Rosita tells Eugene that they can still talk. She knows a lot is changing, but that doesn’t mean things need to change between them. She knows what he did for Gabriel, for them, and thanks him. He says it was more like a have to versus want to situation. She starts messing with the radio parts. He says he thought she would be getting some much needed R & R, but she says, it’s more like a have to versus want to situation. They work on the radio together.

A girl tells Henry that he looks lost. He says he’s looking for someone. Enid tells Gabriel the communities can learn techniques from each other. Find out each other’s weaknesses, strengths, and talents; have each other’s backs. Gabriel thinks it’s a good idea. Enid leaves, and Gabriel asks if Tara is okay. She says she just wants to get on the road; they’re leaving at first light. Gabriel says there’s no reason for anyone else to go, but Tara wants people to know that she’s there for them when trouble comes, and they can count on her. He says they have no reason not to. She says when she comes back, they’ll talk about training facilities.

Luke argues with Alden about starting with a mid-tempo ballad. He says, the people need hope. They demand it; no, they deserve it. Alden can’t believe he let Luke talk him into this. Enid says she’ll only make fun of him the tiniest bit for the rest of their lives.

Henry finds Lydia, and asks if something happened. Alpha continues to look around. She sees drawing of Ezekiel and Carol. Tammy and Earl go by with the baby. Tammy says they should name him Adam after the first man. Alpha overhears them and gives them the side-eye.

Henry can’t believe Gage and Rodney. It’s not true; they were being jerks. He doesn’t know if Addy likes him, but he doesn’t like her. He likes Lydia. She likes him too. He kisses her. They hear a noise, and Henry tells her it’s just one of the pipes; it happens all the time, but he should check on it. He says he’ll sit next to her at the movies. He kisses her, and leaves.

Ezekiel asks Alpha is she’s finding her way all right. He introduces himself, and she says, she’s Debra from Alexandria, but everyone calls her Debbie. She can’t believe Michonne came. He says he wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t seen it. She says it’s a shame they’ve never met, and tells him the Kingdom is amazing. He thinks they clean up well. She heard the queen is taking care of official business, but looks forward to meeting her. She asks if Ezekiel can point her toward the clothing booths. It’s sweater weather soon, and she wants to be ready. She has a feeling it’s going to be a hard winter. He says he has just the thing, and takes her arm.

People get ready for the movie. A guy sells popcorn in the aisles. There’s a cartoon before the film, and everyone is all excited and clapping. Henry still isn’t there, and Lydia seems restless. She starts getting into the cartoon, laughing, when she feels a hand on her knee. She looks next to her, and it’s Alpha. Alpha puts her finger to her lips.

Daryl and Michonne are surrounded, but he tells Alpha that she’s not getting Lydia back. Alpha says this isn’t about her daughter. She ran into trouble on the road; it was unavoidable. Her people like to keep moving. Michonne says they granted Lydia asylum. If they try to take her by force, there will be retaliation. Alpha asks Michonne her name, and asks Daryl if Michonne speaks for him. He says they speak for each other. She says her daughter is not a concern. She was weak. Daryl says, was? What does that mean? She says their group is in no position to threaten her. It’s a habit that needs to be broke. She cocks her gun, and takes Daryl from the group.

A new day dawns as Alpha brings Daryl up a rocky hill. He looks down on a million zombies. She says her people are among them. The only reason they’re alive is because she let them live. He asks what she wants, and she says, nothing. They have nothing to offer her. She’s seen how they live. She’s walked their streets. It’s a joke; a shrine to a long dead world. Her people, the Whisperers, live as nature intended. He asks if that’s the bullsh*t she feeds her sheep so they follow her. She says they follow because she’s the Alpha, and if an Alpha doesn’t assert herself, it will be chaos. He asks what she’s done. She says his friends at camp are fine, but tell them next time they cross her line, her horde will cross theirs. South of the river is hers; he’ll see the border as he leaves. She tells him, go. His friends are waiting for him. He should push her off that cliff.

Backtracking to the fair, Alpha pushes Lydia up against a wall, calling her a coward. She tells Lydia, come with her, but Lydia says, no. She believes in these people Alpha says, that’s poison talk. Lydia says she’s staying there. They care about each other, and care about her. They keep her safe. They’d kill Alpha to protect her; she just has to scream. Walk away and leave them alone or she will scream. Alpha says she’s only doing the hard thing; the thing mothers have to do to protect their young. As she talks, Alpha pets Lydia’s hair, and caresses her face. Lydia shows Alpha the brand on her arm, and say she knows what Alpha has done. She lives with it every day, but she doesn’t want Alpha to get hurt. She just wants her to go. She says, please, mommy. She’s giving Alpha a choice, which is more than Alpha has ever given her. Alpha says she was just trying to make Lydia strong, but she’s not one of them. She never was. Alpha backs up, looks Lydia over, and leaves. Lydia cries.

Forward to being with Daryl, Alpha says she doesn’t think they can protect her daughter, but she hopes she’s wrong. Daryl says she is.

Carol meets Daryl. They hug. Sad music plays. The group heads back.

Beta says, Lydia, but Alpha wants to be alone. He leaves, and Alpha cries quietly. She sees a Whisperer watching, and gestures for him to come to her. She stabs him in the neck, wipes the blade on her pants, and looks to the sky.

Michonne finds Siddiq tied to a tree. She asks, what happened? He points, and they go up a hill. Michonne looks horrified. Daryl looks puzzled. I wonder, wtf is it? They continue to walk. Ohh, it’s heads on pikes. Everyone is stunned. Yumiko cries.

Eugene asks if Nabila has seen Frankie. Gage asks if anyone has seen Rodney; they were supposed to meet. Gabriel tells Eugene that he needs to speak with Tara when she gets back. While Luke and Alden sing, Alden looks around for Enid. Lydia grabs Ezekiel, telling him that her mom was there, and she can’t find Henry.

We see the heads. Ozzy, Alek (Ozzy’s sidekick), DJ, Tammy, Frankie, Rodney, Addy, Enid, and Tara. Their mouths move a little, which is pretty freaking creepy. Siddiq cries.

Daryl stops Carol before she gets there. We see Henry’s head last. Everyone is pulverized.

Siddiq stands on a stage. He says he was there. He was taken with the others, and he saw. He was supposed to die with them, and he was ready to. Then Alpha whispered to him, tell them. Something hit him, and everything went black. When he woke up, he was alone. What happened was evil. He thinks Alpha left him alive to tell that story. To scare them, and drive them apart again, but he wants to tell a different story. Before the end, Ozzy found them. We see them fighting. Siddiq says the Highwaymen gave them an opening and everyone fought back; fought like hell. What they did was more than brave. They defended each other; sacrificed themselves for each other. Some of them didn’t even know each other. We see more of the fight. Siddiq continues, at the very end – we see Alpha approach Henry – in the end, their time was cut short. Ours keeps going, so we have to keep going for them, and for all of us. They need to honor them, and remember these friends were family, and died as heroes. That’s the story he wants to tell. That he wants them all to remember.

Daryl and Lydia stand near the pikes where the heads were. Lydia takes her necklace off, and puts it where Henry was. She and Daryl walk off together. We see the necklace – a wooden pendant with an H carved in it. It starts to snow. Winter ain’t just coming on Game of Thrones.

I told you we can’t have anything nice around here.

Next time, the finale. Zombies rise from the snow, and Lydia disappears. Oddly enough, this episode was titled, The Calm Before. I can’t imagine the storm to come.

🐋 This weekend, I watched The Meg. It was predictable, but fun, and there was a tiny twist at the end that was a real first. As an added bonus, Mickey was played in Taiwanese over the ending credits. A giant shark and foreign pop? What more could I ask for?

The Walking Dead

This episode did some time jumping, which I hate, so I hope you can follow. I hope I could follow. I thought I was done with this sort of thing when Once Upon a Time was canceled.

All is peaceful near a river. Michonne rides up on a horse, and there are a few lingering zombies around the water. She slices one’s face off. She digs a gun out of the dirt, and whacks another zombie. We see that she’s pregnant. Daryl joins her. He says he followed the water to the ocean and back. There’s nothing there. He asks if she’s good. She says this one’s been kicking the sh*t out of her every morning. Judith has been asking about Daryl and wonders if he’ll be back. He says he will – when he finds something. He thinks he’ll be out there for a while. She says he doesn’t need to, but he says he’ll never stop looking. Not ever. She asks if he’s okay being alone. He nods, and says, her? She rubs her belly, and says she’s not.

Michonne cleans the gun. I assume it’s Rick’s. She puts I in a box marked Judith.

Aaron walks purposefully down the street. Judith and some other kids play. Michonne tells Judith to stay with her brother. Aaron tells Michonne, Daryl is at the at gate. He’s not alone.

Daryl tells Michonne that Henry is hurt. Hilltop was the closest; they had no other choice. Michonne sees Lydia, and asks, what about her? Henry she’s with them. Michonne looks at Aaron, who says they can’t trust her. Michonne says she trusts Daryl. She tells the guard, open it.

A pregnant Michonne opens the gate to a group of kids with Tara. The guard says they were found wandering; one of them is hurt. There’s an adult woman with them, and she says, my God, it’s Michonne. Michonne says, Chocolate?

Siddiq stitches up Josslyn aka Chocolate, who’s the hurt one. Michonne asks Daryl, where to now? Straight to the Kingdom? He says, not straight, but yeah; Carol should know. Connie thanks Michonne for everything. Michonne tells a woman at the door to keep an eye on the girl, and she says she’s on it. Aaron tells Michonne, it doesn’t look like they were following. Daryl covered his tracks. But if the skin jobs look for them, they’ll find them. Michonne says, and then?

Josslyn wants to go, but Siddiq says she’s lost too much blood. She can’t travel. Josslyn says, there are others. Michonne grabs her, and says, it’s her. Talk to her. Tell her what she needs. Josslyn says she needs them.

Michonne, Gabriel, Aaron, and some others enter a building. Michonne asks if they’re sure, and Siddiq says it was one of the places Josslyn mentioned. Aaron tries a door, but it’s locked. He says they’ll have to go back, but Judith has already crawled into a ventilation tunnel. Eugene gives her points for dexterity. She opens the door, and they go inside. They see writing on the walls. They hear a whistle, and a bunch of kids come out.

Henry says his wound is going to leave a huge scar, but Lydia likes it. He’ll never forget what he did; neither will she. Michonne needs speak Lydia – alone. Henry says he’ll make himself scarce. He thanks Michonne for letting the people go to the fair. Michonne says if she knew all this would happen, she wouldn’t have. Can’t say I blame her. She asks if Lydia cares about him? Lydia says she does, and Michonne says her too. Michonne tells her, sit, and they sit on the steps. Michonne says she’s done things to protect this place; things she’s not proud of, and some she’s tried to forget. To save her people, she had to risk others. It hasn’t been easy, but she did what she had to do. She’s made her peace with that. It might be easier if the only life risked was her own life. She could just walk away, and take all the risk with her. If that could make everyone safe, it wouldn’t be so hard. She tells Lydia, think about that, and leaves. Lydia ponders Michonne’s words.

As they sit on a bridge in the now, Judith asks Daryl if Hilltop is in danger. Daryl says, it might be. Judith asks if he wants to help. She asks if he’ll stay if mom says it’s okay. Daryl doesn’t know. He should keep moving. She’s read stories about how he and her dad fought the Saviors and won. He can do that again. He says they’re just stories. She asks what would her dad do? and gets silence. She says, that’s what she thought.

Gabriel plays a game with the kids. Pregnant Michonne watches. Aaron says he didn’t know how much they needed this until now. She wishes Rick could see it. Aaron says, wherever he is, he’s sure Rick knows. He says, sorry, that’s not what he meant, and she tells him, it’s okay. She finds Josslyn in the kitchen, and says she’s impressed with the kids’ hunting skills. She doesn’t know how Josslyn does it; all the kids. Josslyn says, they take care of her. The adults never made it. They’re broke, but children crumble, learn, and come back. Michonne brought her kids back to her. She knows that Michonne is going out to look for her man. She knows the look. Their junior year, Dean Turner told her that she’d need a thousand signatures before her petition would be considered. She had that look when she brought them to him at his fancy-ass event. Michonne says she’s at least going to enjoy this. She asks Josslyn, what if she never finds him? Josslyn says she might not, but if she gives up now, she never will. She can’t live with that. Michonne says she needs to know. Judith and the baby deserve to know. Josslyn says Michonne found her after fifteen years. Last time they saw each other, there was still a world. Michonne takes Josslyn’s hand, and says she’s so glad Josslyn is there. Josslyn says, so is she.

At today’s Hilltop, Aaron talks to Daryl about his kid. Daryl says, a lot has changed. When they last talked, they were still building bridges. Michonne joins them, and tells Daryl, stay safe. He says, her too. She tells him that Judith is mad at her. She told Judith she’s not ready, and neither is Judith. She’s a kid, and gets to keep being one for as long as Michonne can help it. Daryl says, it’s not just a little kid she’s got there. He calls Dog, and the gate closes behind them. Judith walks off. Michonne follows, stopping to look at the sewer cap that allows access underground.

Aaron asks pregnant Michonne if Judith is having a sleepover. She says, yeah. Judith loves them.

Michonne and another couple knock on Josslyn’s door. When there’s no answer, Michonne lets herself in. She calls for Josslyn, and the man with her calls for Marcus. They go outside, and start calling for the kids. Marcus’s dad sees the pantry is cleaned out. Michonne continues calling for Judith, when he tells her to come there. He shows her the pantry, and they see the guard is dead. A girl runs up and says they’ve been raided. Michonne says, no, and follows small footprints to the underground tunnel.

Presently, Michonne has dinner with Marcus and Judith, telling Judith, eat; don’t poke. Judith says, sorry; she not hungry, and asks to be excused. Michonne lies awake. She sits up, and we see her scar, an X on her lower back. She knocks at Judith’s door. She knows Judith is upset. She’d like to talk. There’s something she wants to tell her. She goes into Judith’s room. Judith is gone.

Michonne asks Negan if Judith has been there. He asks if she’s curious, or… She tells him, answer her question. He says he hasn’t seen Judith since yesterday. She asks what they talk about, and he wonders why. She says for someone who wants to be helpful, he’s doing a sh*t job. He says they talk about nothing; just chit-chat. Michonne asks for specifics, and he says, homework. She misses Daryl, and likes to hear stories about her dad. Michonne asks if he’s feeding her bullsh*t, but he says Judith would weed that out. He tells Judith that she’s just as much of a bad ass as Carl. He tells her about how her dad got into the Sanctuary, and shot up Negan’s men, and how her dad sliced his jugular. She asks if he tells Judith why. Negan says Judith likes listening to him. Michonne says he likes hearing himself, and he says they have that in common. He shoots straight. If Michonne did that, maybe she’d be talking to Judith instead of him. Michonne laughs, and asks if he told Judith what he did to Glenn and Abraham. He’s quiet, and she says she didn’t think so. He says he’s always been honest with her. Judith asks questions, and he answers; so yeah, she’s heard those stories too. She hates that Michonne isn’t letting people into Hilltop. She thinks it should be like how Carl would want; like in Carl’s letter. Michonne says he doesn’t get to tell her about Carl, or what Judith wants or feels. Judith is her daughter. Negan says, exactly right. She has her own idea of how things should be. He says Michonne didn’t come because she’s curious. She has no idea where Judith is. Maybe she’s off petting a horse, or maybe she’s exactly like her mom, and not taking sh*t lying down. Michonne jets.

Michonne runs home, and runs upstairs. She opens a note that says, I’m sorry I had to go. Our friends need help.

Pregnant Michonne and Daryl walk through a field. Daryl suggests they take a break. They sit on a swing set. Daryl says they’ll find her. Michonne can’t believe this heartbreak. After Judith lost her mom, she wanted to be that for her again – she needed it. She let her guard down. Daryl says she didn’t know, but Michonne says she should have sensed something. Daryl says she didn’t because Michonne’s not like her. Some people are evil in their heart, and hide it; like they’re wearing a mask. This is on Josslyn, and she’ll pay. They’ll find them. Michonne suggests they get going.

Michonne sees a little girl breaking into a school. The girl brandishes a knife, and runs. Michonne yells, wait! Daryl comes around the other side, and aims his crossbow. He turns a corner inside the building, and sees a group of kids blocking them. Michonne asks where her kids are. The group has weapons, and Daryl says, drop ‘em. One of the kids shoots at him, and Michonne says, okay, lowering her weapon. One of the kids knocks her out.

Michonne and Daryl are gagged, and their wrists are bound to a pipe. The kids look at them. A little blonde boy says, she’s awake. Josslyn is there. The child has a branding iron with an X. Michonne tells Daryl, be strong. The child brands Daryl, and although he makes muffled noises, he keeps in control. Josslyn says, well done, Linus. He says, the strong survive. She says, and thrive. She says she told Michonne, children are capable of anything. She taught them, become what you are; they can be soft. Michonne tries to talk. She sees the iron being heated again. Josslyn tells Linus, control it. Don’t let it control you. Linus goes behind Michonne, and brands her. She cries out, and Josslyn gets in her face.

Present day Michonne is on a horse, riding over a field. She sees a lone bike, and looks panicked. She gets off the horse, and runs through a crowd of zombies, calling for Judith.

Daryl gets loose, and cuts pregnant Michonne down. She says they should split up, and Daryl agrees. She goes upstairs, and finds an open door, but it’s padlocked. Josslyn walks down the hall with the kids, saying there could be more of them. Holding a piece of pipe, Michonne stands in front of them, and Linus blows a whistle. Michonne asks, where are her kids? Where’s Judith? Tell her. Josslyn says, why? She’s better off. Michonne lives in the past, and Judith isn’t a ghost like her. Michonne calls for Judith. Most of the kids take off out the door, and an older kid locks it behind them. Linus says, kill them off. Michonne doesn’t want to hurt them, but Linus slashes Michonne’s stomach, and now she’s pissed. She screams, no! and they run. She tries the door, but it’s locked. She sees the kids run past outside, and gets out, but Josslyn is waiting, and whacks her with a board. She hits Michonne a few more times, saying she’s truly sorry. Michonne grabs her sword, and stabs Josslyn in the thigh. When she’s down, Michonne stands over her, and stabs her in the chest, finishing her. Linus runs up. He can’t believe it. Michonne doubles over. The kids are at the ready to pounce on her, but she says they can come back to Alexandria. They’ll be taken care of. An older kid tells them to kill her; the rest, come with him. Linus runs at her. She tries to keep him at bay, telling him, no, when the older kid comes up behind her.

Present day Michonne is in the field, slicing and dicing zombies, while pregnant Michonne fends off Linus, who has a knife to her stomach. She has no choice but to start carving at the kids. The timelines are interspersed. Another little blonde boy, Whitney (honestly, all these little kids look the same), runs to the trailer, and stands at the top of the steps with a knife. Michonne tells him, please don’t. Daryl comes out – gee, thanks for your help – and walks toward Whitney. Whitney puts down the knife. For a moment, we think he’s going to hug Michonne, but he runs past her, and away. She cries, and calls to Judith. Judith, who looks to be about four, comes out of the trailer. She stands there a moment, but then runs to Michonne, saying, mommy! More kids come out, and Michonne welcomes them.

In the field, Michonne stabs another zombie. Judith is there with her, and spears the last one. She’s miscalculated though, as it’s down, but not out, and grabs her. Michonne gives it a last jab. She hugs Judith, and asks if she’s okay. They need to talk.

Michonne tells Judith that she stood there, like she didn’t know. For a second, she thought she was too late, that Judith had changed, and she’d lost her. Judith says Michonne didn’t look like herself because of the blood; that’s all it was. Michonne says, she remembers that? Judith nods, and Michonne asks, what else? Judith says, Josslyn and her kids were nice to them the whole time. They made it seem like game, but she was a bad person. They all were. That’s why Michonne did what she did. Michonne says, all this time, she thought Judith didn’t remember. She’d hoped Judith didn’t. She never said anything after the first year. Judith says it made Michonne sad. Michonne says she thought Judith would understand. How did they get there? Judith says their friends need their help, and Michonne says, it’s not that simple. Judith says, yes, it is. Michonne chose to be her mom because they love each other. Michonne agrees, and Judith says, love means doing whatever it takes to keep the ones you love safe. She asks when they stopped loving Daryl, Maggie, Carol. and the King? Michonne says, they didn’t, and Judith says, then why does it feel that way? Michonne hugs her.

The gates open. Michonne and Daryl come back with little Judith and the kids. Siddiq takes Michonne with him. Aaron closes the gate after them.

At the baby’s grave, Michonne tells Judith that she and Judith’s father dug this together. That day, standing there, she made a promise to never bury another child again. Then Judith’s father was gone, and she was lost. Then Judith was lost, and she was scared. More than she’s ever been, before or since. She wasn’t the only one, so they decided to make the place only about the people there. It’s not what Carl or her dad gave their lives to create, but it kept her safe. It’s what she wanted. It’s all she wanted. She cries, and says Judith was right. They have to protect the people they love. All the people they love. She takes Judith’s hand, and they walk back.

Michonne and Judith travel in a buggy. Michonne slows down. Daryl, Connie, Henry, and Lydia come out of the woods. Judith asks if anyone is headed to the Kingdom. They get in.

Two Whisperers look out from a distance. They see the buggy going into the Kingdom. One of them says, we must tell Alpha.

Next time, Ezekiel stands before them today at the start of a new tomorrow, the groups merge, and Beta says only Daryl has to die.

🔊 On Talking Dead, Chris Hardwick started off with, happy St. Patrick’s Day. Or as sober people call it, don’t leave your house day. I had to laugh, given my aversion to the holiday, after having worked in Manhattan during it. Useless zombie trivia: he was also a walker in tonight’s episode.

🚴 Tonight was the finale of Ride with Norman Reedus. Norman took on Tennessee, going to Memphis first. He met up with major song writer Dale Watson, who took him all over the place, their first stop being a custom bike shop. Dale said that Memphis tries to repurpose old buildings rather than tear them down, which gets my vote. They had breakfast with Henry Nelson, the voice of Memphis radio, and I could not take my eyes off the food, in particular, the biscuits. Henry was a font of historical knowledge, and said, in his opinion, Memphis was just beginning to heal from the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination. They hit World Studios, a recording studio that had about a billion gold records on the wall. The owner said at one time, the building had been a silent movie theater. Being African American, his dad wasn’t allowed to record there, but eventually bought the guy out. A prime example of living well being the best revenge. They had an autograph wall, and we found out The Beatles had once signed it, but it had been painted over by a little old man with a roller. Norman told us, from Al Green to Wu Tang to Bruno Mars; there’s magic in these walls. Next, Norman met two-girl band Sister Antics, at a dive bar that was part of the historic foundation of the town, and a seemed to be a dive bar on purpose. They followed the Mississippi River, and headed for Nashville. After doing some fishing on the Tennessee River, they hooked up with some more musicians, and we found out that Nashville has had a white rapper scene for quite some time. I can’t say I’ve ever thought, nothing says Eminem like Nashville. Norman and the ladies followed what had once been an old Native American trail, and then parted company. Norman’s next stop was a hot fried chicken place where he met Marilyn Manson. One of my favorite things is how they splice in mini interviews with locals, much like Sweet Home does. On the subject of hot friend chicken, we found out it’s dipped, marinated, doused, and submerged in hot sauce; and it’s a hillbilly concoction that will set your ass on fire. Marilyn accompanied Norman about town by riding in a motorcycle sidecar. They spent time with designer Manuel, who started Johnny Cash on the road to being the Man in Black. He sold one-of-a-kind items, many of which, Marilyn tried on. We also discovered, Marilyn loves roller skating, and is quite the speed skating demon. He and Norman attended the Roller Derby, which looked like a lot of fun. I love the Roller Derby, which may or may not be a surprise. Kansas City Bomber is one of my favorite films. They took a picture with the girls, and everyone was thrilled. I enjoyed this show so much, I’m hoping they do another season. The best thing about it is how Norman really makes you want to be there.

The Walking Dead

Daryl, Lydia, Henry, and Connie run through the forest. Daryl says they’re going back to Hilltop. Lydia says, there are too many of them, and he asks why she told them there weren’t that many. She says they had her locked in cage, and wanted her to betray her own people. He asks if she wants to go back to them, and she says she can’t. He says then she’s coming with them. Henry says they can keep running. If they disappear, Hilltop can’t be blamed. Let him fix this. Daryl says, no way in hell he’s running with Lydia; think of his mom. Connie and Daryl disagree on which direction to go, and everyone follows Connie, even Dog. Daryl has no choice but to follow.

At the camp. Beta stomps around. He sees a Whisperer with a gaping neck wound. The guy says he’s going to be one of them, but Beta says he’ll always be a Whisperer. He tells someone to find the guy’s wife. Tell her the change is coming to him. Well, I guess her too, if they stay married. He asks another Whisperer if Henry and Lydia have been found. She says, no, but they’re on their trail. He says Lydia will walk with them again. They’ll all walk with them.

The Kingdom decorates for the fair. Jerry’s wife, Nabila, tells Carole it’s what they fought so hard for; the chance to be different people. They can’t give up now. Carol says, Jerry is knocking off early, and wonders what happened to his armor. Nabila asks if he’s all right. Dianne says they need to talk to the king.

Jerry says he was bushwhacked. They took all his stuff, and gave him this. It’s a letter that says, we are the Highwaymen. The roads belong to them, and their visitors will be turned away unless they pay the toll. Jerry says they must have heard him talking about the fair. He’s sorry, but Ezekiel says, it’s a trade fair; it’s hardly a secret. They need it, and couldn’t pay the pirates if they wanted to. Dianne wonders if they’re renegade Saviors, but Ezekiel says, they don’t write letters. Jerry says they have to do something to keep the people safe. Carol says the fair could be their last chance. Ezekiel says, gather every fighter they can spare. He tells Carol, it never ends, does it? I know exactly how he feels.

Tara, Magna, and the others come up against some downed trees blocking the road. Tara says they have to clear it before the Whisperers catch up with them. They start moving the blockade. Earl wants to give them a hand, but Tammy says he’s not getting any younger. She’s holding the Whisperer baby, and Earl says the baby deserves better than two old farts. They’ll find him a nice family. Kerry asks if there’s anything she can do, but Yumiko says Connie is okay with Daryl. Magna says they’ll catch up at the fair. They remove the roadblock.

Daryl and the others see a hotel. Connie points. Daryl says, higher ground, and Connie writes, a chokepoint. He says, walkers can’t go up, and they need to separate the living from the dead. They travel in a herd. He asks Lydia if there aren’t five or six traveling within a crowd. Lydia says her mother won’t send an army if she doesn’t have to. She’ll send Beta. Daryl asks if he’s the best, and she nods. Daryl says, good; he’ll kill him first. They go into the hotel.

Jerry looks through binoculars, and tells Dianne there are two guys and they’ve got guns Dianne takes a look. She says they can take them both out before they start shooting. Carol says, it’s like old times. Carol tells Ezekiel that they have guns, He says he had hoped for a better future, but violence seems to be the only currency they understand, same as the old world. Carol says they could try talking to them, and Ezekiel asks if she thinks they’d listen. She says they could have killed Jerry, but they didn’t. They sent a grammatically correct letter. They sounded civil. Jerry says, it was a grammatically correct death threat, but Dianne says, they only said people can’t pass. Ezekiel says they have their knives at the Kingdom’s throat. What if she’s wrong? Carol says, if she is, and they don’t listen, then they’ll kill them.

Daryl and the others investigate the hotel. Connie moves part of floor, and there are supplies underneath. Daryl says, the stairwells are already barricaded. He guesses she already knows that, and she writes they stayed there once. He says there are two ways out, and looks at a map of the place. Connie writes that she wants Lydia to stay, but Daryl says they have to take her back, or his friends die. He writes, friends will die, and Connie writes something back, ripping the page out of her notebook, and shoving it in his hand. He reads, we have friends, she doesn’t.

Ezekiel, Carol, and Jerry go into a basement. Oh great, there are mannequins stored there. A dude in a cowboy hat (I find out later his name is Ozzy, which isn’t mentioned, but we’ll call him that for clarity’s sake), says they were meeting with the king alone. Ezekiel says, the king and queen rule together. Ozzy says, that’s not the deal, but Carol says they didn’t have a deal. Are they doing business or not? Ozzy says they were supposed to bring something, but Carol says they’re not paying a toll. Ezekiel says they’ve brought alternative solutions. Ozzy says, how about this for an alternative solution? Some of the mannequins turn out to be Ozzy’s men, and they cock their guns. Ozzy says maybe they’ll pay for Ezekiel, but Ezekiel says they can’t pay with what they don’t have. Ozzy says they have food and clean water. They’ll take what Ezekiel’s got. Ezekiel says they got need what they’ve got, and Ozzy says, so do they. Ezekiel’s people step out of the shadows, backing him up, and get the best of the Highwaymen. Ezekiel says what they’re doing threatens the future of his community, and they’ll fight to stop them from taking it. Ozzy says he’s listening, and Ezekiel wants to offer him a job. Carol says they need help keeping the grounds clear. Instead of threatening the people on the roads, they’ll keep them safe. Jerry whispers something to Ezekiel, who says Jerry would like his sword back. Ozzy asks what they get in return, and Ezekiel says they’ll be granted access to the Kingdom and fair. Ozzy laughs, and asks if that’s joke. Carol says it’s a trade market, and Ezekiel asks what good are the things they steal, if they if can’t trade them for what they need? Ozzy holds out Jerry’s sword, and says they’ll have to do better than that. Carol asks when was the last time any of them saw a movie? Ezekiel is like, wha…? and Ozzy says, seriously? She smiles, and Ezekiel smiles.

Lydia hammers boards over a window. Henry brings her a pokey stick that he’s carved special for her. He doesn’t need a point, but thought a spear would be easier for her. She says, these are her people. They looked out for her most of her life. She can’t do it. He tells her that he’ll save it. He says he’ll try not to kill any of her people. She asks why he’s doing this. He says she didn’t want to go back, but she says that’s no reason to risk his life. He says he’s not letting them take her. She says they made her mother look weak, and Alpha can’t let it go. He says then they’ll run, but she says there’s no place to go where she can’t find them. Henry is sure there is; there’s a whole world out there. Lydia asks if he’d really go with her. He moves closer to her, and she asks why he came for her. He says because he cares about her. She kisses him, and killjoy Daryl is suddenly there. He says, come on; they have to keep watch. He’s like somebody’s dad right now.

Magna tells Tara, they’re headed his way; maybe ten. Tara gives instructions to everyone, and tells Earl to get the horses. The zombies (or not) toddle out of the woods. The group dispatches them one by one. Earl is trying to untie the wagon, when a zombie comes up behind him, and he gets knocked down. Tammy puts the baby in a trunk, as the zombies start to clamor at the wagon. A zombie is on top of Earl, and he struggles with it. Tammy comes flying off the wagon, stabs one on her way to Earl, and whacks the zombie off of him. They see a group on horses riding toward them. It’s Ozzy and the Highwaymen (sounds like a band). Tara asks who the hell they are, and Ozzy says, their escorts to the fair, at her service. She’s like, wtf?

Henry looks out from a balcony. Lydia stands on the other end, silent and watching. She smiles at him, and he he smiles back. Lydia sees the zombies (and not) walking toward the hotel, and says, they’re coming.

Beta says, spread out. Daryl aims his crossbow, and takes a zombie and/or Whisperer out. Beta looks up. Daryl says, they’re here; let’s go. The mob busts right into the place, and start to tromp through the first floor. Beta says, the stairwell, and tells one of the others to lead them up. Daryl says Lydia is coming with him. She kisses Henry before she goes. Connie and Henry bolster the windows.

Beta heads upstairs. Zombies cluster in the staircase, and Beta realizes it’s a trap. Daryl takes Lydia to a closet and tells her, get in. Lydia wants to help, but he says she can’t help if she won’t fight. He leaves Dog with her, saying, if anyone comes through, Dog will take them down. If it happens, she should run. She thanks him, and he locks her in.

Henry hears them coming. The door handle jiggles, and it opens. Two Whisperers with knives come in. Henry jumps out, surprising them, and kills one. The other tries to shoot an arrow at him, but Connie gets him with a slingshot from behind.

Daryl is at the ready with his crossbow, when the door busts open, and Beta comes in, along with some others. Daryl sees a silhouette of a Whisperer, and cuts him down. In the closet, Lydia hears Henry struggling, and Dog bears his teeth. Lydia looks around for something to pry the door open with, and finds a crowbar. She calls to Henry, and gets the door open. Dog takes a zombie down, as Lydia runs to Henry. Henry finishes the zombie off. Connie is there, and stabs another. Lydia tells Henry that she’s sorry, and he says him too. We see Henry has a wound.

Daryl kills another zombie, grabbing it from behind. Beta flies in, and slams Daryl against the wall. He asks, where is she? Both he and Daryl have knives, and they have a knife fight, like something out of Jackie Chan, but not as funny. Daryl down crawls away, but Beta yanks him up, putting his face near a table buzz saw. He asks again, where is she? This time, Daryl slams Beta – who, BTW, is a humongous dude – and he knocks Daryl to the floor. Daryl sticks a small knife in Beta’s neck, and Beta crashes through the wall like a cartoon character. Beta pulls the knife out, but by the time he returns, Daryl has disappeared. Daryl reveals himself in the floor cubby hole. Beta says Daryl is nothing to him; he’s already dead. All he wants is the girl. Daryl crawls out, and shoves Beta, who stumbles back, and falls down an elevator shaft. Daryl spits on him. Good for Daryl. He also picks up his knife on the way out.

The fair is happening. Ozzy walks through it, tipping his hat to Carol. Everyone is happy for a nanosecond. Tara and the Hilltoppers being in some stuff. Earl and Tammy bring the baby along. Earl tells Nabila, they were hoping to find someone to take the baby in, but Tammy says she’s not letting the baby go. Nabila tells Earl that he baby already has a good home. Carol hugs Tara. Carol asks where Henry is, and Tara asks, what about Daryl. They were meeting them there. Carol wonders where they are.

Connie hits some car windows with the slingshot, smashing them to attract the zombies. They gravitate toward the car.

Lydia wraps Henry’s wound. Daryl says they should go. Henry asks where they’re going, and Daryl tells him, there’s a whole world out there. Are they breaking away from the pack?

They leave. Beta lies at the bottom of the elevator shaft, but as anyone with sense figured, he’s not dead. Just a little stiff. He huffs and puffs, grunts and groans, and gets himself up. He looks up.

Next time, Henry tells Michonne that Lydia is with them, Michonne takes out Rick’s gun, Judith asks Daryl what her dad would say, and Michonne is in trouble.

🚴 On Ride with Norman Reedus, Norman picked up friend Sean Patrick Flanery at his place outside Houston, and they rode to Dallas. Sean is from the Lone Star State, and he and Norman played twin brothers on Boondock Saints. Sean claimed they had actually met before that, but it was not a story for mixed company (i.e. the viewing audience). Hmm…. We learn that eight seconds can make or break a bull rider, and watched some dangerous moves. They made a trip to the Texas Motorway, where they took in some drag racing, and did a little themselves. The insurance people for TWD must hate Norman. They also looked at the bluebonnet flowers, which Norman assured us was different than when Carol said to look at the flowers. They went to visit tattoo artist, Oliver Peck, at Deep Ellum in Dallas. Having met Norman at a charity event ages ago, they became fast friends. When Norman gifted Oliver with a knife, Oliver insisted on giving Norman five bucks. We learned it’s bad luck to take a free knife, so that might be something you want to write down. Oliver also hosted an old-fashioned barbecue, and showed off the massive warehouse where he lives with his wife. Daryl and Sean autographed a poster from Boondock Saints that was hanging up. After lunch, there was a lively armadillo race. Daryl discovered that Texas encourages you to be bold, take chances, and be whoever you want to be. I still can’t believe I like this show as much as I do. Never say never. I didn’t think Game of Thrones was my cup of tea either, but not only have I screamed at the TV over a CGI dragon’s demise, I scream at George RR Martin to write faster.

The Walking Dead

I swear, every time I see that warriors wanted ad for the Army that comes on before the show, I think the show started. It irritates me that it’s exactly what they want me to think, so that I look at it.

The Whisperers walk with the zombies. Lydia is without a face skin, and Alpha asks if she took it off, but Lydia says they took it from her. She tells Alpha that she acted like she needed help. Alpha asks if he touched her, but she says, no. Alpha asks if Lydia told them anything, and Lydia says she told them there were only a few of their kind. She lied to get him to trust her. Except for one thing – she said they shouldn’t cross Alpha. Alpha stands in front of Lydia, inching her face closer to Lydia’s. She asks what Lydia found out, and Lydia says it’s mostly farmland, some supplies; their weapons are basic. She doesn’t think they have anything to trade. Alpha wonders what she gets in return for Lydia’s release. Lydia says it’s all she’s got, and asks if the only reason Alpha came get her was to get information. Alpha says, stupid question.

Michonne asks, who else knew? Gabriel says Eugene and Rosita were the only ones. They would have told her if anyone else was out there. Michonne wonders who else might have been listening. She says Eugene and Rosita went out to set up this relay, and almost died because of it. Jesus did die because of it. Negan got out since Gabriel was distracted because of it. She can’t have a council if she has no information. Gabriel says they gave her the option to veto security concerns, but it seems like everything is a security concern now. Their votes don’t matter anyway, unless Michonne agrees. She says putting themselves out there when they don’t have to is dangerous. Gabriel says, so is cutting themselves off from everyone else. Who do they turn to when they need help? They can’t worry so much about their enemies that they lose their friends. Aaron says they already did lose a friend. They had the best intentions, but it doesn’t change what happened. There’s an enemy out there; the kind Michonne was afraid they’d find. He doesn’t regret the time he spent out there – maybe what happened would have happened anyway – but they can’t pretend they don’t know what’s out there now. They put Michonne in charge of security for a reason. She’s saved them time and again. Siddiq says, at what cost? Carol asked for help with the fair, and Michonne turned her down. Gabriel says, she spoke on behalf of Alexandria? Michonne says, the fair is old business, but Siddiq says they have new information. He says, the fair starts day after tomorrow. It’s not too late to reconsider. Carol says the Kingdom is worse than Ezekiel is letting on in his letter. They’re too isolated, and need the trade. Carol wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t serious. A woman makes a motion for a second vote, but Gabriel says, why? Michonne will just veto it. Michonne says she would. The roads are broken, and a dangerous group dressed as the dead are trying to kill them. She wishes she could help them. They can vote, and she’ll open their doors to their friends like they did with the Sanctuary, but Carol made it clear that Ezekiel isn’t ready to give up the Kingdom, and she’s not ready to risk the lives of Alexandrians for this. Siddiq asks what it means to survive if the Kingdom falls. Michonne says, it means Alexandria survives. She’s obviously not a team player, and leaves on that note.

Rosita can’t button her pants and gets frustrated. Gabriel comes in, looking pretty gloomy. Rosita says, looks like it went well. He says he’s the leader of a council that’s not really a council anymore. She asks what Michonne said, but he’d rather not talk about it. He knows he’s being difficult. He’s not trying be, but it’s a lot. She says, it’s okay. She’s sorry too. He asks, what for? and she says they were just getting started. He didn’t sign up for this. She didn’t either, but it’s happening. It’s a blessing, but if it’s too much, and he wants to walk, she gets it. He asks what she wants, and she says he knows what she wants. The ball is in his court.

Lydia sits under a tree and finds a spool of cord or wire or something under the dirt. Henry watches from a distance. A Whisperer comes up behind him, and he fights it off with his pokey stick, but Beta grabs him from the other side, tosses the stick, and pulls him out of the ditch he’s been hiding in. Beta tells Alpha that Henry has been tracking them. She asks if there are others, but he says, just him. She asks who he is, and Beta twists his arm. Alpha says Beta can break it, then other one, then his legs. They can feed the hungry ones. Henry says, okay. He’s from Hilltop, but they didn’t send him. He came for Lydia. Lydia walks up to him, and punches him, knocking him to the ground. Alpha says he’s coming with them. She tells them to keep their eyes open; where there’s one, there’s more than one. They begin to walk again. I guess she’s supposed to be smart, but talks like she didn’t even finish high school. How come Lydia can communicate just fine?

Eugene visits Gabriel. He’s brought a chart listing the pros and cons of Gabriel staying with Rosita and raising another man’s baby. He says happiness shows growth in the long term. Gabriel thanks him. Eugene also brought along the evaluating criteria. Gabriel is like, thanks, but no thanks. Eugene says he’d be a damn fool to let her go. They’ve been through the stew, and Gabriel never gave up on him, even when he gave up on himself. Gabriel saw things he didn’t. Rosita is the best thing that happened to Gabriel since this sh*t storm started. He should think before he throws the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. Gabriel says, he’s not the father. Eugene says, it’s not his decision; it’s all hers. It’s not for him, Eugene or Siddiq to say. Eugene doesn’t understand it, but Rosita loves Gabriel. He needs to put his hang-ups on the back burner. He and Rosita love each other. Stop wasting time. It’s all they have in the end. Gabriel says, time or love? And Eugene says, both. He hands Gabriel a tote bag, saying, it’s a peace offering from Gabriel to Rosita. He found some pantalones with super stretchy waistbands for her soon to be expanding breadbasket.

Alpha asks if Lydia knew her friend was following them. She says he’s not her friend; he was in the cell next to her. Alpha asks his name, and Lydia says, Henry. Alpha says she didn’t mention him, and Lydia says, he didn’t seem worth mentioning. Alpha says, he thought it was worth risking his life chasing after her. Lydia says she acted helpless, and he fell for it. He’s dumber than she thought. Alpha laughs, and says, don’t be so sure. Maybe she’s just a good liar. Alpha asks if Lydia knows why she trusts animals. They don’t lie. Well, they don’t speak English either, so how do we know? She tells Lydia that she has to lie. So do they; it’s what they do. It’s just words, air, nothing more. Remember that. She hands Lydia an apple, and Lydia takes a bite.

They see another Whisperer/zombie group in the distance, and Alpha says Lydia is back where she belongs. Beta pushes Henry onward. They reach a camp where people are behaving somewhat normally. Henry asks Lydia if it’s their camp, and Beta shoves him. Alpha tells Beta to get Lydia a new skin. Two dudes are getting meat off a deer or something. Yay. Real food.

Negan tells Michonne, welcome home. She says she wants answers, and was told he’d only give them to her. Why did he come back? He tells her it isn’t entirely Gabriel’s fault that he escaped. You can’t keep a big dog locked up. Sooner or later, he runs. Michonne says, he came back. What kind of dog does that make him? He’s glad she asked. He was in her home. He could have waited there, and bashed her head in; a whole lot of heads, but he didn’t. She says he’d be a dead man. He’s an a-hole, not an idiot. She thinks he decided to take his shot out there, and out there spit him out, so he dragged his pathetic ass back. He says, the world has changed, but he’s changed too. She asks what he wants. He says if she’s not going to kill him, trust him a little. She laughs. She says just because he chose self-preservation over revenge doesn’t earn her trust. If fresh bullsh*t counts as change, congratulations on being a new man. He says she’s keeping him to show how merciful Rick was, but he can be helpful. She had a good thing going, but it’s slipping through her fingers, and it’s only a matter of time before she loses control. His cell is outside the meeting room, and he hears things. She says he heard wrong. He tells her, all he’s saying is that he knows a thing or two about keeping people in line. He can be a sounding board; leader to former leader. She says she’s not their leader, and Negan and I roll our eyes. He says she wrote up a constitution that gives power to the people, yet she makes all the decisions. It’s one helluva racket. She says, it’s not a racket; he knows nothing about this place. He says he knows a good leader uses everything to their advantage. She says, if that’s why he came back, he should have stayed out there. They’re going to tie him up while they fortify the lock, and she wants the windows closed. She sees something outside the window, and leaves.

In the woods, Daryl and Connie look for Henry. Connie looks at the ground, and writes, he caught up with them. Daryl says, there was a struggle. Dog sniffs around, and brings Henry’s pokey stick to Daryl. Daryl says, they went that way. Two real zombies toddle up, and Connie gets them with her slingshot before Daryl can even shoot an arrow. He says, nice. Dog barks, and retrieves Daryl’s arrow, after he’s bitten it in half. Connie laughs, and Daryl says, bad dog. I hope we don’t lose Dog, since we can never have anything nice on this show.

Beta skins a face. Alpha talks to Henry, saying he wonders why they hide among them; why they become them. Henry says they’re not them; they’re not dead. Alpha says, the weak die, like nature intended. A man approaches, and asks if that’s what today was; her letting the weak die. She always says they’ll go back for the lost, but they never do. They gave up two of theirs for her girl. He doesn’t like the math. Alpha says, they know who they are and what they have. The trade was worth it. If he has a problem with her as their leader, he knows what to do. He says he challenges her. She’s not fit to lead anymore. She laughs, and asks if he thinks he’s the man to replace her; the new Alpha. Beta grabs him from behind, which seems to be Beta’s specialty. The man says she’s changing the rules again. Alpha says anyone has the right challenge her leadership at any time, and she has right to defend it. A woman is also there, and Alpha says she saw her plotting with her boyfriend. They have a staring contest for a moment, and the woman says, the boy is a danger. His people have killed some of theirs. Where’s the payback? They haven’t failed her; she’s failed all of them. Alpha says they follow her by choice. She makes them strong, and keeps them alive. The woman says she doesn’t want to fight Alpha. Alpha slinks around behind her, saying, too late, and slices her head off with a wire. Henry is just a little freaked. Alpha holds the head up. The boyfriend takes it from her. Lydia looks bored in the background. Alpha pushes dude’s hair back tenderly, then stabs him. I’m fairly certain Henry is thinking, great. Why did I decide to do this instead of making horseshoes for the fair?

Michonne asks Judith how practice was, and Judith says, fine. Michonne says she must have gone late, since she was standing near the jail an hour ago. Why was she spying? Judith says she wasn’t. She went to see Negan, Michonne been talking to him? Why? Judith says she feels sorry for him. Michonne says he’s not her friend, and Judith says, obviously. Michonne asks why she’s talking to him. Judith says he listens to her; not everybody does. Michonne doesn’t want her near him again. Judith asks, why not? and Michonne says, there’s a reason he’s in a cage. He’s a monster. Judith says, no, he’s not. He’s a human being. Michonne says, he’s done monstrous things. He’s killed people, people she cared about, people her dad cared about. If they let him out, he could start over again. Judith says, he did get out. He’s not like that anymore. Michonne gets why Judith wants to believe that, but people don’t really change. Judith says, she did. D’oh! Michonne tells her to go to her room. Judith asks, why? and Michonne says she needs a minute. Judith sighs, and goes to her room.

Lydia looks at Henry. She picks something up and moves on. It looks like that’s all they do at the camp. Pick things up and move them somewhere else. Alpha washes her hands, and tells Beta take off her mask. He unlaces the back. She says, it’s been years since that happened. It felt different this time. Beta says the pack believes in her. They’re alive because of her. It’s good to remind them. She says she turned her back on Lydia once, when she was three, and found her in a closet tangled in dry cleaning plastic. It was in Lydia’s mouth, and she stood there watching. Lydia was turning blue, and she tore the plastic off her face. When Lydia’s breathing steadied, she asked if she was okay. Lydia nodded, then Alpha hit her hard so she would remember to never do it again. You have to do whatever it takes to protect what you love, even if it’s from themselves. Beta says, they need to be protected from the outside too. They need to be ready for when they come for the boy. Beta says, if Lydia feels something for someone like him from somewhere like that, she needs to know. Alpha says, let’s find out.

The bodies of dude and his headless girlfriend are dragged into a field. This looks like the most boring life ever. Lydia was probably trying to kill herself at three, rather than exist in this boring vacuum. The zombies feed on headless chick and her boyfriend. Connie and Daryl watch from a distance.

Gabriel approaches Siddiq outside his house. Rosita comes out on the porch, and they smile at one another. The three of them go inside. Eugene watches, teary-eyed. Aw, what I did for love.

Michonne asks Grace if her dad is home. Aaron comes to door. Michonne wanted to thank him for his support. She’s sure it wasn’t easy, but he says, it was. They all agreed on the rules and to live by them. It’s easy forget why they had them in first place. The way things have gone down recently made him remember. She appreciates that. It’s why she wanted to tell him first. If the council wants a re-vote about sending a delegation to the fair, she won’t veto it. He says if they cross the Whisperers, they’ll be risking lives. She thinks it’s a terrible idea, but the people can weigh the risk and choose. That’s their right. It’s what the charter they agreed to and swore to protect says. It’s also for the Kingdom. Aaron hopes she doesn’t regret it. Michonne does too.

Everyone gets things together, putting supplies and trade on wagons to head for the Kingdom. The cheese Michonne sits alone.

Beta grabs Henry, and drags him over to Alpha and Lydia. Alpha throws down a knife, and tells Lydia, pick it up. Take it, and kill the boy. Lydia looks panicked. Alpha says she wasn’t gone long, but maybe long enough. Lydia says, for what? and Alpha says, to forget the side she’s on. Lydia looks like she might cry. Henry says, please. Alpha tells her, don’t be weak. She knows what happened to the last guy. Kill him or Beta will kill them both.

Suddenly, people are yelling, and there are zombies overrunning the camp. Lots of biting, and blood spurting everywhere. Daryl pulls on a mask, and finds Henry. He tells Henry to put his head down; they’re leaving. Henry won’t go without Lydia. Lydia hesitates, but Henry tells her that they need to go. They run, along with Daryl and Connie.

Next time, Carol says it could be their last chance, Ezekiel wants to gather every fighter, and Daryl sets up camp at a hotel to watch for the Whisperers.

🚴 This week on Ride with Norman Reedus, Norman took Austin Amelio (Dwight, TWD) on an adventure through Arizona. They visited an awesome, weird zoo oasis, where they had fun with ostriches and ostrich eggs, which are surprisingly strong and make humongous omelets. They also spent time with Ron Halford, lead singer of Judas Priest – ♫ Breakin’ the law! Breakin’ the law! ♫ – who was sweeter than you might think, and a very well-balanced individual. An Airforce base was also on the agenda, where they participated in a practice rescue mission, and saw where old planes live that are used for parts.

👎 I’d been looking forward to seeing the film Slenderman on HBO, and got my chance this weekend. I’m not sure what I wanted from that movie, but I know that wasn’t it. I got more excitement from reading about it on the internet, and the special effects were cheap.
